ASK THE GAME & FISH

Q. “My 11-year-old son wants to come along on my deer and antelope hunts. Can he carry a .22 and hunt rabbits?”

A.  He can as long as he’s had hunter education. Hunter safety is required of anyone born after 1965. Also if your son is a Wyoming resident, no license is needed for cottontail rabbit hunting until he is 14. Likewise, nonresident youth under 14 do not need a license for cottontails, but they must be with an adult who has a small game license. No license is required for jackrabbits, but youth must have completed hunter safety. The only exception is that persons taking wildlife on land owned by their own family do not require hunter education.
