9/7/2006State Parks See Busy Weekend, Continue Fall ActivitiesPIERRE, S.D – Summer’s final three-day weekend kept South Dakota’s state parks and recreation areas fairly busy throughout the state. Park managers reported that campgrounds were mostly full, typical for the holiday weekend. “Even though school and sporting events have already begun, many people came out to enjoy the cooler weather this Labor Day weekend in the state parks,” said Emilie Miller, information officer with the Division of Parks and Recreation. “The weekend typically marks the end of summer use, however, autumn family recreation is just beginning.” Educational programming and activities continue in the parks with weekend Walk in the Parks and Halloween activities topping the list. Visit www.SDparks.info for a full calendar of park events. Miller also notes that the camping season is far from over. “Fall camping is becoming more and more popular. Fall colors, cooler weather and a slower pace attract many campers to the parks during the autumn months,” she said. After Labor Day weekend, most campgrounds offer first-come, first-served camping. However, reservations can be made for arrival dates through Oct. 9 at the following parks: · Big Sioux Recreation near Brandon · Custer State Park near Custer · Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton · Newton Hills State Park near Canton · Palisades State Park near Garretson · Snake Creek Recreation Area near Platte To make a reservation at one of the above parks, visit www.CampSD.com or call the reservation center at 1-800-710-CAMP (2267). Camping cabins and lodges may also be reserved year-round through the reservation center.
