CONTROLLED DEER-ARCHERY HUNT SET FOR THIS FALL AT A DESIGNATED
AREA OF ALUM CREEK STATE PARK
Hunters will be selected through a lottery scheduled for
Saturday, September 16
DELAWARE, OH - In order to control the rapidly growing number of deer
in the Lewis Center area of
Alum Creek State Park in Delaware County, the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources (ODNR) will again sponsor a limited archery hunt
between November 1, 2006 and January 31, 2007.
This area is approximately 320 acres in size and has a growing
population of white-tailed deer. Forty archery hunters (20 for
each of the two seasons), plus 10 alternates, will be selected using a
lottery system. This will provide approximately 16 acres for
each hunter participating in the management project. Urban deer permits
will also be valid in this area.
“Deer thrive in the area because of an abundance of habitat found in the
park, adjacent agricultural land and suburban backyards where hunting
has been restricted or prohibited. The end result in these protected
areas is an abundance of deer that leads to increased incidences of
crop, landscape and property damage,” said Victor Ricks, manager of Alum
Creek State Park. “Also, there is an increased potential for
deer/vehicle collisions.”
Lottery applications will be taken in person at the park office,
3615 S. Old State Road, beginning at 9 a.m. on September 16, and the
drawing will be held at 10 a.m. Applications will only be accepted from
participants who have pre-qualified with their archery equipment prior
to the drawing date. Applicants must also bring a current Ohio hunting
license and deer permit issued in the applicant’s name.
Immediately after the drawing, successful applicants will attend an
orientation session and be issued a hunting permit. Please contact Alum
Creek State Park at 740-548-4631 for details about pre-qualification
requirements and locations.
