The
Oden State Fish Hatchery, in collaboration with SEE-North (Science
and Environmental Education-North), a Petoskey-based nonprofit
organization, and Michigan Technological University Researcher Mark
Gleason, will use a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to explore the
waters of the hatchery's big fish pond Friday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to attend this fascinating program that examines
the aquatic life beneath the surface. This program is free and no
registration is required.
The ROV consists of a waterproof video camera that is self-propelled
and remotely operated via a 500-foot tether. It has two cameras that can
project a live view of the subsurface on a video screen, lights and a
grapple for retrieving small objects. It is similar to, although much
smaller than, the ROVs used to explore shipwrecks, etc. that are seen on
TV or in the movies.
For more information, contact the
Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center at (231) 348-0998. The visitor
center is located on US-31, five miles east of Petoskey. Free admission;
open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Labor Day.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use
and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
