Recreational Fishing Report

Great Lakes temperature map
Cooler weather this week has helped restore some of the better
fishing, especially on the inland waters, however strong winds have put
a damper on fishing in the Great Lakes.
Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Walleye fishing has been slow with a few fish
being taken near the Banana Dyke on bottom bouncers and crawler
harnesses. Perch have been caught in waters 26 feet deep off Stony Point
on shiners. Other good areas have been east of E Buoy, Sputnick, and the
Ferme Power Plant.
Detroit River - Walleye are being caught in the Lower Trenton
Channel near Horse Island and Celeron Island. At Horse Island anglers
are having luck drifting crawler harnesses while those fishing near
Celeron Island are hand-lining or jigging in 15 to 21 feet of water. The
best fishing has been in the afternoon and evening hours.
Lake St. Clair - Fishing has been very slow. A few perch have
been caught at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in 12 to 14 feet of water on
minnows or worms. There was a report of a northern musky being caught on
the Canadian side of the lake.
St. Clair River - Boat anglers are catching plenty of walleye
near the Blue Water Bridge while drifting crawlers. Plenty of smallmouth
bass are being caught throughout the river on crawlers or jigs. Those
fishing the mouth of the Black River are catching white bass on minnows.
Ford Lake - Crappie fishing has been good near the Sunken
Island Bridge using small jigs and wax worms. Bass fishing has been fair
in waters up to 13 feet deep around the points. Tube jigs in green or
brown have worked the best.
Port Sanilac - Perch fishing continues to be excellent.
Anglers are getting limit catches in 30 to 40 feet of water in the weed
beds. Chinook salmon and lake trout fishing has been good in 100 feet of
water while fishing near the bottom. Pier fishing is slow.
Port Austin - Has been the busiest trout and salmon port in
the area. There is good lake trout, chinook and steelhead fishing in and
around 100 feet of water. Boat anglers are catching perch near Oak
Point. Pier fishing is slow.
Saginaw Bay - Fair to good perch fishing is being reported in
several areas near the Black Hole, the Spark Plug out of Sebewaing, Buoy
H, Buoy 16, and Buoys 1 and 2. Many limit catches were reported. Another
good area has been out of Caseville near Oak Point in 30 feet of water.
Walleye activity has slowed down with most catches in 9 to 10 feet of
water on the northwest end of the Callahan Reef. Another good area has
been near the Spark Plug, Buoys 1 and 2, and areas around the Slot. A
few channel catfish have been caught at the Hot Ponds. Smallmouth bass
fishing has been good near Charity Island in 7 to 9 feet of water.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Pier fishing is great with plenty of perch being
taken off the north pier while fishing on the river side with minnows or
cut bait. Steelhead are being taken while still-fishing with shrimp or
casting body baits or spoons. Chinook are starting to show up around the
piers as well.
St. Joseph River - Fishing has slowed. Shore anglers have had
a tough time catching fish but boat anglers are having luck at the creek
mouths on crawlers or flies. Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be
good. Those targeting walleye are doing well up towards the dam at
Berrien Springs. Crawlers fished on the bottom and small jigs are the
way to go.
South Haven - Plenty of perch are being caught in waters 15 to
50 feet deep, just off the bottom. Chinook are being caught while
trolling in waters 90 to 150 feet deep.
Holland - Walleye fishing has been good in front of the Van
Andel docks. Chinook salmon are being caught in 60 to 100 feet of water
on a variety of spoons. Boat anglers are catching perch in waters 8 to
15 feet deep. Pier fishing has been slow with only a few perch being
caught.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Walleye are being caught in
several areas along the river including the Fulton Street Bridge, the
Wealthy Street Bridge, and up near the Sixth Street Dam. The walleye are
hitting on crawlers. Some channel catfish have been caught off of the
Fulton Street Bridge and the Bridge Street Bridge. There are a few
reports of northern pike being caught off the west wall near the Wealthy
Street Bridge using sucker minnows. Flathead catfish are being caught in
the Johnson Park area on sucker minnows. A few crappie and plenty of
smallmouth bass have been caught at Riverside Park.
Grand Haven - The perch are biting both to the north and south
of the harbor. Minnows or alewives have worked the best.
Muskegon - Fishing has been slow due to high winds. Those
venturing out have caught salmon while trolling spoons 30 to 45 feet
down in 40 to 80 feet of water. Other anglers are having success using
J-Plugs such as the chrome Red Head or Wonder Bread.
Muskegon Lake - Salmon are being caught in the channel and on
the west end of the lake using J-Plugs. Smallmouth bass have been caught
in the channel on leeches. Plenty of walleye are being caught in both
the north and south end of the lake. On the north end anglers are
drifting spin bait with a crawler near the Muskegon State Park. Those
fishing the south end of the lake are finding the best catches by the
Red Buoy. Shore anglers fishing at Heritage Landing are catching walleye
in the evening hours on leeches or crawlers.
Whitehall - Fishing has been great. Chinook salmon are being
caught 40 to 60 feet down in water 110 feet deep. Anglers are catching
them throughout the day but the majority of the fish are being caught in
the early morning hours between 5:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Cheboygan - Fishing has been pretty slow with only a few fish
being caught on the south side of Bois Blanc Island and at the Bell in
the shipping channel. Most anglers are heading up to Mackinac Island and
the Straits area where most of the fish are being caught. Trolling with
spoons, dodgers with flies, squid, and cut bait has worked well in 60 to
130 feet of water.
Rogers City - The fish are biting just about anywhere, but
some good spots are out from Calcite, the pump house, straight out from
the harbor, near Adams Point, north of the state park, and Forty Mile
Point. Set downriggers 30 to 90 feet down in waters 60 to 120 feet deep.
Spoons with dodgers or flodgers with flies or squid running behind them
have worked well. Good colors are green, white, blue, black and white or
glow.
Presque Isle - Good places to fish are north off the big
lighthouse, North Bay, Stoneport, and False Presque Isle. Try fishing 30
to 90 feet down in 60 to 120 feet of water with spoons of various
colors. Morning fishing has been the best so make sure to be out early.
The fish seem to be hanging tight to structure.
Rockport - Has had very little fishing effort due to recent
high winds. Those boats heading out have caught salmon at the Wreck
while trolling spoons or sliders off downriggers in 85 to 120 feet of
water. Try trolling 40 feet down in waters 45 to 60 feet deep between
the shore and Middle Island.
Hubbard Lake - Walleye fishing is good. Anglers are having the
best results in South Bay in 45 to 50 feet of water while trolling right
on the bottom with crawlers. Those targeting perch are having luck on

fishing has been slow with only a few walleye being caught.
Tawas - Pier anglers continue to take fair catches of perch
ranging from 6 to 10 inches, as well as a few smallmouth and rock bass.
Boat anglers are catching perch out off the Coast Guard Station while
fishing the weed beds. Those trolling for walleye have taken some limits
using crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers in 55 to 75 feet of water.
Au Gres - Walleye fishing remains to be good as most fish are
hitting in 35 to 40 feet of water. Perch action is picking up with the
best areas being off the hotel in 32 feet of water and out around the
shipping channel in 40 to 45 feet of water.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Harbor Springs - Lake trout and salmon have been caught while
trolling near the point 85 feet down in water 135 feet deep. Try using
spoons in greens or blues.

Point in the early morning hours at depths of 130 feet while fishing 50
to 65 feet down. During the daytime the fish are being taken slightly
deeper, from 85 to 110 feet down. Most anglers are having luck using
spoons and dodger and flies. Several chinook with clipped adipose fins
have been caught and anglers are asked to turn the heads in. There is a
freezer in the Charlevoix fish cleaning station for this purpose as well
as forms and plastic bags.
Lake Charlevoix - Walleye fishing has slowed a bit over the
last week. Anglers have been trolling and drifting crawler harnesses and
rapalas in 15 to 30 feet of water with few fish to show for it. Popular
locations have included areas around the Dutchman's Bay public access,
Horton Bay, near Young State Park and near the harbor in Boyne City.
Good smallmouth bass fishing continues near Horton Bay, Hemingway Point,
near the harbor in Boyne City, and all of the South Arm in 10 to 30 feet
of water. The perch bite has been good near Two Mile Point, the
Belvedere Club, Oyster Bay, near the Coast Guard Station, and near the
Boyne City harbor. Try using shrimp, minnows and crawlers in 15 to 30
feet of water. Bluegill are being caught off the park in East Jordan
while still-fishing and drifting in 15 to 20 feet of water using crawler
harnesses.
Traverse City - On the East Bay, anglers caught a fair amount
of chinook while trolling the South Bank, Old Mission Peninsula, and
from Yuba to Elk Rapids. Most were caught on Hootchie Mama's with green
or silver flies. Spoons of a variety of colors such as Orange Crush,
green with silver, or green with blue have worked as well. Anglers had
the best success while trolling lures 65 to 70 feet down in 140 to 200
feet of water. A few whitefish were caught off of Elk Rapids in 80 to 90
feet of water while jigging Swedish pimples. On the West Bay, anglers
continue to pick up a fair amount of chinook while trolling around the
Hole in the early morning and late evening hours. Hootchie Mama's with
green or silver flies caught the most fish with spoons working as well.
Leland - Fishing continues to be great. Excellent catches of
chinook salmon can be found on the first bank and on the north side of
North Manitou Island. The thermo cline continues to be deep with reports
at 100 to 120 feet. Lake trout are being caught on the first and second
bank on spoons such as the Flounder Pounder or Mongolian Beef.
Glen Arbor - Fishing has slowed due to the weather. When
anglers can get out they are catching chinook, brown trout and steelhead
on the west side of South Manitou Island and off Pyramid Point. Green
frogs and blue dolphins are producing chinook and brown trout, while
double Orange Crush are producing chinook and steelhead.
Frankfort - Great catches of chinook, coho, lake trout, and
steelhead have been caught in 70 to 175 feet of water from the Herring
Hole north to Point Betsie. Most anglers have been trolling off the bank
with meat rigs, white and green flies, and spoons. Hot baits have been
the Brew Ha, Angry Gnome, Hot Lobster, Mongoose, glow Spin Doctor, and
blue Chilly Willies. Pier fishing is still slow due to the high water
temperatures but a few fish were caught on the Elberta side.
Onekama - Fishing for chinook, coho and lake trout has been
great while trolling in 140 to 190 feet of water to the north of the
piers. Anglers are trolling as far north as the golf course and getting
good catches of fish on white flies, meat rigs, and yellow, blue, and
green spoons with a lure set 65 to 90 feet down. Pier fishing for trout
and salmon has been slow. On the Portage Lake end of the piers, good
numbers of smallmouth, largemouth and rock bass have been caught.
Portage Lake - Anglers are doing well for bass on the weed
edges. Pan fish are being caught in waters as deep as 30 feet. Try
crawler harnesses or wax worms for bluegill and crappie.
Crystal Lake - Anglers are catching some decent bass, perch
and lake trout on the west end of the lake.
Lake Cadillac - Anglers are catching crappie from the city
dock on the east end of the lake on minnows at dusk and dawn. Pan fish
are being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water at the northeast corner of the
lake near the city launch, and the southeast corner near the Four Winns
test facility.
Lake Mitchell - Fishing has picked up a little with anglers
catching pan fish in 10 to 15 feet of water on the east shore using
pieces of worm. Those targeting bass are finding them in 10 to 20 feet
of water on the south end of the lake.
Manistee - Continues to have good fishing. Boat anglers are
trolling 35 to 60 feet down in 80 to 120 feet of water both north and
south of the harbor. The fish are moving up into the river and some
anglers are catching them up at the tubes near Stronach. The Little
Manistee weir was installed on Tuesday, August 15th. The river, from 300
feet below the weir, will remain open until September 1st. The river,
from 300 feet above the weir, will remain open through December 31st.
Pier anglers have had luck catching chinook off from the north and south
pier while casting spoons.
Ludington - Anglers reported good fishing when trolling in 80
to 120 feet of water. They are catching mostly chinook mixed with the
occasional steelhead mixed in. The fish have been coming in the top 50
feet of water. The fish are moving in closer to the pier and should be
staging soon. Pier anglers caught a few fish off the north pier while
casting spoons.
Pentwater - The catch has been almost exclusively chinook
salmon. The best fishing seems to be at about 40 to 60 feet down in 110
foot of water. Anglers are catching fish throughout the day but the
majority of them are coming between 5:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
Upper Peninsula

leeches, using crawler harnesses, and trolling and drifting live or
artificial bait. Walleye are being found in the East Arm near the
islands and south of the islands near rock structures. Anglers are

Menominee Boat Marina. In the Cedar River, salmon are being caught in
the area of the Whaleback Shoal about 65 feet down in waters 110 feet
deep. Smallmouth catches have been good just above the M-35 Bridge. Late
evening anglers are catching walleye at the river mouth.
Little Bay De Noc - Walleye catches remain fair as the fish
are moving to deeper water. Anglers reported catches in Kipling,
Gladstone, the Black Bottom area, and Portage Point all in 30 feet of
water with most fish right on the bottom. Most anglers are trolling or
drifting crawlers but those fishing off Portage had the best success
trolling crank baits. Perch catches are up this week with the best area
being out from Gladstone in 25 to 33 feet of water. Smallmouth bass are
active around the Kipling area in 10 to 19 feet of water. Salmon anglers
reported fair catches out at the Ford River Buoy, fishing 60 to 80 feet
down in waters 80 to 110 feet deep.
Big Bay De Noc - Walleye anglers report good numbers marked
between St. Vital Island and Round Island while drifting and trolling
crawlers in 20 to 35 feet of water. Smallmouth bass fishing has been
slow. A few perch were caught out of Ogontz in 14 to 25 feet of water.
Salmon anglers at Fairport continue to fish the deeper waters and are
now fishing 80 to 160 feet down in waters 140 to 200 feet deep.
Marquette - Boat anglers heading out for trout or salmon have
had some strong winds to contend to. Those trolling for lake trout have
had fair success north or east of the Upper Harbor break wall. An
occasional coho has been taken but anglers trolling near the harbors for
salmon have not had much luck.
Munising / Au Train - Strong winds have kept a lot of anglers
off the water this past week. Anglers that did venture out reported good
success with lake trout being caught in waters 150 to 200 feet deep on
flies, peanuts, and spoons behind cowbells and dodgers. There have been
no reports of coho as of yet.
St. Mary's River - There have been no catches of chinook
salmon as of this report. Plenty of walleye are being caught at the

with a crawler harness. Walleye are being caught in 12 to 14 feet of
water around the rock piles at the north end of Neebish Island. A few
perch are being caught in the river channel.
De Tour - Not much has changed from last week. Anglers
continue to catch chinook salmon and lake trout from the Shipping
Channel to the #3 Green Can and around the lighthouse. The salmon are
averaging 4 to 12 pounds with a few up near 18 pounds. Most are using
lime flies, lime squid, spoons or silver J-Plugs. Maud Bay and Sweets
Point are producing some nice walleye on pink or copper blades.
Cedarville / Hessel - Perch, rock bass and smallmouth bass
were caught in Cedarville Bay and Musky Bay. The pan fish catch has
slowed due to the warmer water temperatures. Anglers targeting salmon
are having fair to good results off Goose Island, in the Dolomite
Shipping Channel and in Yacht Entrance. During the daytime hours, try
fishing in 70 feet of water or deeper due to the warmer water
temperatures. As the evening progresses try coming in a little
shallower.

trolling the back side of Mackinac Island and in front of the Coast
Guard Station. The salmon are averaging 4 to 13 pounds and are biting on
seaweed colored flies, blue and green spoons, and green and yellow
spoons. Those targeting smallmouth bass are having luck wading the west
side of the Mackinaw Bridge and casting stick bait. |
