Registration Open for 2006 Delmarva Wetlands Conference; Oct. 11 and 12 Conference Features Wetlands Professionals, Field Trips on Second Day

The Division of Water Resources, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, is accepting registration for the 2006 Delmarva Wetlands Conference to be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 11 and 12, at the Sheraton Dover Hotel, 1570 N. DuPont Highway, Dover.

Titled “Integrating Wetland Restoration and Protection onto the Landscape,” the conference will include a full day of presentations by a variety of wetlands professionals along with two featured speakers. Dr. Dennis Whigham of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center will discuss how wetland monitoring, conservation and restoration have progressed over the past several decades and reflect on where we are today. Suzanne Klimek, director of operations with the North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program, will give details about how the program was established and its accomplishments since 2003.

Other presenters will include guests from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, the Center for Inland Bays, the University of Delaware, the Nature Conservancy and Biohabitats, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the University of Maryland and Ducks Unlimited, along with DNREC staff.

The second day will feature field trips providing hands on experiences in restoration, monitoring and outreach approaches. Tour options include a visit to the created wetland at Christ the Teacher Catholic School in northern New Castle County, a trip to see restored seasonal wetlands and forested upland in northern Caroline County, Md., a tour of Delmarva’s diverse wetlands and a close-up look at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge on the restored Christina Riverfront in Wilmington. Early registration is encouraged as tour space is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 15. Regular registration costs $60; student registration costs $20. Late registration received after Sept. 15 is $100. Lodging is available at the Sheraton Dover Hotel; call 302-678-8500.
