Departure of Lifeguards Will Leave Cape Henlopen State
Park's Gordons Pond Beach Unguarded
There will be no lifeguards for the rest of the summer at Cape Henlopen
State Park’s Gordons Pond beach as of Monday, Aug. 14, the state Division of
Parks and Recreation has announced.
“It’s that time of year,” according to Park Superintendent Pat Cooper.
“Lifeguards are starting to leave for college and sport camps and we won’t
have enough to guard every swimming area. Gordons Pond will remain open, but
we highly recommended swimming at the guarded beach areas.”
“Unguarded Beach” signs will be posted at all dune crossings, fee booths and
other beach access areas.
Cape Henlopen’s main beach will remain guarded through Labor Day. All other
state park ocean swimming areas may be smaller and limited in use. Delaware
Seashore and Fenwick Island state parks also may be affected in the next
week or two. The Division will announce any changes.
