DNR continues to seek public input on deer populations
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to accept
comments online and in writing regarding deer numbers throughout the
forested region of Minnesota.
Earlier this year, the DNR worked with hunters, landowners, businesses,
local governments and conservation groups to help set the future direction
of deer populations in the state's forested region. Their findings have been
compiled into a presentation, available online at
www.dnr.state.mn.us.
After viewing the presentation, web users may submit comments, which will be
used in setting population goals.
"With hunting seasons opening shortly, we expect more traffic on the DNR Web
site," said Lou Cornicelli, DNR Big Game Program coordinator. "We're
reminding hunters and others with an interest in deer numbers to take the
time to view the presentation and submit comments."
So far, 1,300 Web users have gone online to view a presentation and submit
comments. Comments will be accepted through the end of August.
On the opening Web page there will be some information on the goal setting
process and the steps for working through the information. The first page
shows a map from which users will select their area of interest. People can
click the area on the map to access a presentation. (The presentations are
in PDF format, requiring Adobe Acrobat to view them.)
The presentation explains the deer goal setting process, a brief history of
deer management and the team recommendations for the selected area.
After viewing the presentation, there will be a link on the last slide to a
brief survey. Users should click the button, fill out the survey, and then
click "submit." The responses will be saved in a database.
Results will be reported in September. In 2007, DNR will be examining deer
population goals in the farmland portion of Minnesota. This will complete
the statewide goal setting process to provide input on future deer
population levels.
Written comments may be submitted to: Lou Cornicelli, Box 20, 500 Lafayette
Road, St. Paul, MN 55155.
