Frankfort, KY – There’s a state record 8-pound white catfish in Guist Creek Lake just waiting for you to catch it. Join Host Tim Farmer for a sneak peak at the fish this weekend on “Kentucky Afield” television.

Farmer joins fisheries biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to talk about the huge white catfish they netted while doing research on the Shelby County lake. It’ll take a dedicated angler to make this fish a state record, since the biologists released it back into the lake. If caught by a lucky angler, the big catfish would beat the current state record by more than six pounds.

The “Kentucky Afield” crew also heads to Herrington Lake in Mercer County for gar fishing with a bow and arrow. It’s spawning time for gar, and the heat of the day brings them to the surface. Farmer shows viewers how to best take advantage of the summer heat as he demonstrates this unique fishing technique.

Farmer also joins Shelby County angler James Knowles in search of catfish on the Ohio River. Knowles impressed “Kentucky Afield” recently with a picture of his 83-pound blue catfish, prompting Farmer to invite him onto the show. The pair fish near McAlpine Lock and Dam in Jefferson County.

“Kentucky Afield” is a production of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. It is the longest continuously-running outdoor television show in the nation. “Kentucky Afield” airs Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time/7:30 p.m. Central time on KET affiliates. The airtime for the Sunday repeat of the show is 4 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Central.

“Kentucky Afield” also airs Saturday at 10 a.m. on Insight Cable 5 in Northern Kentucky.
“Kentucky Afield” television is a companion program to Kentucky Afield magazine. To learn more about Kentucky’s great outdoors and the state’s hunting and fishing opportunities, subscribe to Kentucky Afield magazine online at fw.ky.gov.
