Frankfort, KY - Celebrate the longest-running outdoor television show in the nation with Bluegrass music, archery and more on “Kentucky Afield” Day in Hazard June 17.

The Dean Osborne Band, the Moron Brothers and Eddie Pennington will perform live Bluegrass music throughout the day while visitors take part in free festivities in the new Hazard Wal-Mart parking lot, 120 Daniel Boone Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Kentucky Afield” television Host Tim Farmer will join others from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources as hunting and fishing take center stage with demonstrations, educational exhibits and hands-on activities.

The event highlights the show’s debut on WYMT-TV, a CBS-affiliated station that serves more than 215,000 households in Eastern Kentucky. “Kentucky Afield” also airs each weekend on Kentucky Educational Television, but hasn’t been on commercial television since 1985. The show’s Wednesday evening airtime on WYMT will give viewers another opportunity to catch the popular hunting and fishing show.

“’Kentucky Afield’ is the oldest television show of its kind in the nation, and we’re excited to see it get this opportunity to reach even more of Eastern Kentucky’s avid sportsmen and women,” said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett, who is scheduled to attend. “This will help highlight the region’s abundant outdoor opportunities.”

The day’s activities will offer something for everyone to enjoy. Spring is the perfect time to chat with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife’s fisheries biologists about the best place to find your next big catch. Also, visitors will learn how to prevent black bear problems with information from the department’s wildlife biologists.

“Kentucky Afield” viewers who love to watch Farmer’s unique archery skills on television – pulling back a bowstring with his teeth – will get to see it in person. Kids can pick up a bow and try archery for themselves with help from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife’s Law Enforcement division.

Department artist Rick Hill will be there from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to autograph free copies of his popular “Kentucky Fish” poster. A limited number of Kentucky Afield magazines featuring Hill’s artwork will be available free.

Representatives from organizations such as the United Trappers of Kentucky and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will also be on hand to answer questions.

“The people of the mountain region of Kentucky mean a lot to us personally,” said “Kentucky Afield” Executive Producer Scott Moore. “We invite them all to come out and enjoy this special day with us as we begin this partnership together in Eastern Kentucky.”

“Kentucky Afield” will make its WYMT-TV debut July 5, and will air at 7 p.m. each Wednesday. Viewers throughout Kentucky will still be able to see the show on KET affiliates Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. Eastern/7:30 p.m. Central and Sundays at 4 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Central.
