Mountain Lion Season Passed

After two months of taking testimony, the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Commission decided to proceed with a mountain lion season for 2006.

"The GFP Commission wanted to make sure that there was ample opportunity for everyone to voice their thoughts on proposed changes to the mountain lion hunting season," said Chuck Schlueter, Communications manager for the Wildlife Division of the GFP.

The commission did decide to make several changes to the 2006 season. Season dates will be from November 1 to December 31. This change allows the first month of the mountain lion hunting season to coincide with the Black Hills Deer season.

A subquota of 8 female mountain lions will be installed in the total limit of 25 lions, compared to a subquota of 5 breeding age females in 2005. "The adjustment to 8 total females was done to address the vagueness of the "breeding age" argument," said George Vandel, Division of Wildlife Assistant Director for GFP.

Hunters can no longer shoot any mountain lion that is in accompaniment with another mountain lion, regardless of whether or not any of the accompanying animals have spotted coats . Like last year, hunters may not shoot any spotted mountain lion.

The commission also finalized the Refuge Deer Season. Changes from 2005 include the elimination of the youth season at Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the creation of a new unit with zero licenses to allow for preference points.

The National refuge Deer Hunting Seasons will be:

bullet

Sand Lake: November 11-15, 16-20, 21-26, November 27-December 3 and December 4-10.

bullet

Lacreek: October 18-24 and November 22-28.

bullet

Waubay (including Waubay State Game Refuge): November 10-14, 15-19 and November 20-December 3.

The 2006 fall wild turkey season will run from October 1 – December 31, 2006. Changes from the 2005 season are as follows:

bullet

Offer residents 1,500 and nonresidents 120 more one-tag "any turkey" licenses (100% increase of 1,720 tags) in the Black Hills than 2005.

bullet

Offer residents 1,200 more one-tag and 175 more two-tag "any turkey" licenses (17% increase of 1,550 tags) in Prairie units than 2005.

bullet

Offer nonresidents 1 less one-tag and 34 more two-tag "any turkey" licenses (11% increase of 67 tags) in Prairie units than 2005.

bullet

Change the season dates for the Black Hills from October 1-31 to October 1 - December 31.

bullet

Allow hunters purchase more than 1 Black Hills Unit license.

bullet

Add new units in Minnehaha and Davison/Hanson Counties as shotgun or archery only units.

bullet

Expand Unit 17A (Charles Mix County) to include Douglas County.

bullet

Combine units 48A (Marshall and NE Day Counties), 55A (Roberts County) and 29A (northern Grant County) with the rest of Day County and all of Codington County to make one shotgun or archery only unit. The southern boundary in Grant County in this unit will change from Highway 12 to Highway 20.

bullet

Add new units with zero licenses available.

The commission also legalized the use of crossbows for taking of rough fish and created a list of restrictions of turtle harvests.
