Governor Murkowski Issues Proclamation Celebrating Alaska's Fishing Heritage

(Juneau) – Governor Frank H. Murkowski has proclaimed June 2006 as Kids Fishing Month and June 10, 2006 as Family Fishing Day.  In honor of National Kids Fishing Month (June 2006) and National Fishing and Boating Week (June 3-11, 2006), the Governor is asking all Alaskans to celebrate our fishery resources, their successful management, and the importance of fishing in Alaska.

“Alaskans have a strong connection to our natural resources, especially our fisheries,” said Governor Murkowski, himself an avid angler.  “Fishing has always been and will always be an integral part of our heritage, tradition, and culture.  Let’s teach Alaska’s youth to fish at an early age; doing so will guarantee a future generation of Alaskan anglers that understands, appreciates, and respects our valuable fishery resources.”

To encourage families to take advantage of Alaska’s wonderful fishing opportunities this month, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is partnering with federal, state, local, and private-sector entities to sponsor kids fishing events in many locations around the state.

For more information on fishing events taking place in your community, please contact your local ADF&G office or visit the following websites:
