Biologists Complete Spring Sage Grouse
Census 052906 North Dakota Game and Fish Department biologists recently completed the 2006 sage grouse survey, and census data showed 196 males were counted on 17 active strutting grounds. In 2005, biologists counted 225 males on 15 active grounds. The all-time high number of male sage grouse counted on leks in the southwest was 542 birds in 1953, compared to a low mark of 111 in 1996. Sage grouse are North Dakota's largest native upland game bird. They are found in extreme southwestern North Dakota, in Bowman and Slope counties. Click Here To Return To The Previous Page |
