| Camper cabins available at
Big Bog State Recreational Area 2006-05-24 The
popularity of the camper cabins at Big Bog State Recreation Area (SRA) is
likely to increase even more now that walleye fishing has reopened on Upper
Red Lake, said manager Doug Easthouse. "These rustic cabins are already in demand by summer season visitors," he said. "We expect that ice-fishing and snowmobile enthusiasts, in particular, will be interested in using the heated cabins in the winter. Since the cabins have heat and electricity, visitors can stay in the park at any season." The park's five units are rustic 12' x 16' log cabins that include a screened porch, wood bunk beds with mattresses, a picnic table and benches. Four of the cabins sleep six people each and one ADA accessible cabin sleeps five. Campers need to bring sleeping bags. All cooking must be done outside the cabin. The cabins have no indoor plumbing, however modern shower and bathroom facilities located nearby in the campground sanitation building are available for seasonal use. Vault toilets next to the cabins remain open for use year-round. "Reservations for the cabins fill rapidly especially for holidays and weekend dates, so we recommend making a reservation as early as possible," said Easthouse. In addition to the camper cabins, Big Bog has 31 campsites including 26 electric sites and two handicapped-accessible campsites. At Big Bog, the regular campground also is available year-round. "Unlike the camper cabins that will be booked heavily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the regular campsites often have some vacancies during the week," Easthouse said. "If folks can plan their visit mid-week, the chances are good they will find a campsite available but we recommend that they make a reservation, just to be sure." Minnesota state parks currently have 36 camper cabins available for rent in 20 parks. At present, 25 of these cabins have electricity and 24 are winterized. Information about the cabins is available online at www.dnr.state.mn.us. Camper cabin reservations can be made a year in advance online at www.stayatmnparks.com or by calling 1-866-85PARKS. Reservations for campsites can be made 90 days in advance by contacting the same online address or phone number. Click Here To Return To The Previous Page |
