Weekly Fishing Report
May 9, 2006 Catches of the weekQuemado Lake: May 5, Don Dailey of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch and a 22-inch rainbow trout. Both fish were caught on one of his own fly creations. Charette Lakes: May 6, Kent Bloomquist of Albuquerque caught a 23-inch, 3.75-pound rainbow trout. He was using an orange Z Ray. Clayton Lake: May 6, Everett Logsdon of Albuquerque caught a 10.25-pound catfish. He was jigging with a worm and looking for walleye. On that same day, Ann Brown of Clayton caught a 10.19-pound walleye. She was bottom fishing with corn and looking for catfish. Santa Rosa Lake: May 7, Dave Thielman of Albuquerque caught a 6.7-pound walleye. He was using a Speed Trap crank bait. If you have a catch of the week story, send it to us at fishnm@hotmail.com. NORTHEAST AREA CHARETTE LAKES: Fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs, power bait, corn, Pistol Petes, spinners and spinner/worm combinations for trout. A few perch were taken on worms. CIMARRON RIVER: Water flow below Eagle Nest as of Monday was 37cfs. Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using elk hair caddis, copper john barrs, bead head pheasant tail nymphs and worms. CLAYTON LAKE: Anglers reported catching lots of perch and trout this past week. Best baits were power bait, salmon eggs, corn and worms. A few good size catfish and walleye were taken by anglers fishing on the bottom and using worms and corn. COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was quite good this past week for crappie, white bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Most of the crappie were taken along the east side of the lake by anglers using minnows. We had several reports of good white bass fishing from anglers fishing above Tetilla Peak. They were using chartreuse and white clausers, crank baits and grubs. Several black bass were caught by anglers using tubes, brush hogs, jigs, lizards and jerk baits. A few northern pike ranging in size from 26-to-35 inches were taken on bunny leaches and crank baits. CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers fishing for walleye, white bass and crappie. Most of the walleye action reported came from anglers fishing around Rattlesnake Island and Big Island. Best baits were spinner/crawler combinations, crank baits and grubs. White bass were hitting chartreuse, white, fire tiger and chrome crank baits. A few were also taken on sassy shad, grubs and tubes. Crappie fishing was best for anglers using minnows and fishing the north end of the lake. Fishing for catfish was fair for anglers using liver, worms, shrimp and dough baits. COYOTE CREEK: We had no reports from anglers this week. EAGLE NEST LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for angler using roe sacs, power bait, spinners, Tasmanian Devils and Pistol Petes for trout. A few perch were taken on worms. Anglers did well from the bank as well as from boats. LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Trout fishing was good this past week at both lakes. Anglers did well using power bait, home made dough baits, size 12 black wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, spinners and salmon eggs. Most of the trout were in the 8-to-10 inch size. MAXWELL LAKE 13: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and marshmallow/egg combinations for trout. A few were also taken on spinners. MCALLISTER LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using spoons, Pistol Petes and power bait for trout. The best reports came from anglers using power bait from the bank. MONASTERY LAKE: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using corn and salmon eggs for trout. MORPHY LAKE: Trout fishing was rated as very good again this past week. Anglers did well using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners, spoons and Pistol Petes. Dry flies continued to work well in the evenings. Hours of operation are from 8a.m. to 8p.m. daily until further notice. PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 47cfs near the town of Pecos. Trout fishing was good for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, copper john barrs, stimulators and spinners. RED RIVER: Water flow near Questa was 32cfs and below the hatchery was 51cfs as of Monday. Fishing was good this past week for anglers using elk hair caddis, parachute adams, prince nymphs and copper john barrs for trout. RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 516cfs. Fishing has been hit or miss due to fluctuating flows. A few trout were taken on wooly buggers and streamers. SANTA CRUZ: We had no reports from anglers this week. SPRINGER LAKE: Fishing was very slow for all species. STORRIE LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, cheese and salmon eggs for trout. A few trout were also taken on spinners and prop flies. UTE LAKE: Surface temps this past week ranged from 60-to-65 degrees. Walleye fishing was good for anglers using bottom bouncer/night crawler rigs and working them at depths of 8-to-18 feet. Several walleye were also taken on leeches, wally divers and shad rap crank baits. Black bass fishing was good for anglers using senkos, tubes, lizards, smallie beavers, brush hogs and jerk baits. Most of the fish were caught in less than 10 feet of water. Anglers who found the schools did well fishing for white bass. They were using sassy shad, grubs and crank baits. Some catfish were taken by anglers fishing the upper Canadian in 8-to-10 feet of water. Best baits were stink baits and night crawlers.
NORTHWEST AREA ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing activity picked up this past week as anglers reported good catches of smallmouth bass and some fair walleye fishing. Crank baits, tubes, walleye flashers with Gulp craws or leeches and lizards all worked well for smallmouth bass. Walleye were taken on spinner/Gulp leech combinations, spinner/worm rigs and crank baits. Most of the fish caught were taken in less than 15 feet of water. The water is clear and surface temps are ranging from 55-to-57 degrees. BLUEWATER LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for trout and catfish. Anglers did well using corn, power bait, salmon eggs, worms, spoons and spinners for trout. Catfish to 6 pounds were taken on dough bait, night crawlers and liver. We heard of a 42 inch tiger musky caught and released but were unable to verify. BURNS CANYON LAKE: Fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, prop flies under a bubble and spinners for trout. Refer to your rules and information booklet for special rules on this water. CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 504cfs and 584cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers fishing below El Vado. They were using night crawlers, spinners and wooly buggers. CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: Trout fishing on the catch and release waters was good for anglers using gray RS2s and dead chickens. A few fish were also taken on small jigs. Fishing at the youth pond was fair for anglers using salmon eggs. EL VADO LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using night crawlers, power bait and spinners for trout. FENTON LAKE: Trout fishing was fair for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, corn, worms, wooly buggers, Pistol Petes and spinners. HERON LAKE: Lake trout fishing was slow-to-fair this past week. A few were taken by anglers jigging in 35-to-40 feet of water. Anglers reported catching a few kokanee this past week while trolling with fire tiger Rapalas at 20 feet. A few rainbow trout were taken by anglers using power bait and salmon eggs near the dam. JEMEZ WATERS: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 15cfs. Trout fishing was reported as fair-to-good here and on most of the Jemez streams. Anglers did well on the Guadalupe, Cebolla and the Rio Las Vacas. Best baits were small copper john barrs, elk hair caddis, prince nymphs, worms and salmon eggs. MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. MCGAFFEY LAKE: Fishing was slow. NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for crappie, blue gill and bass. Anglers did well using jigs, minnows, worms, tubes, lizards and grubs. Most of the fish caught were taken in less than 8 feet of water in the backs of coves. A few bass were also taken on jerk baits and crank baits fished on secondary points. A few trout were taken by anglers fishing from the bank and using power bait. We had no reports on other species. SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 376cfs. There was quite a bit of moss floating in the upper river but fishing was good. Anglers did well using pheasant tail nymphs, copper john barrs, sparkle worms and baetis. A few good size trout were also taken on San Juan worms and RS2s. Fishing in the bait waters was fair for anglers using worms, salmon eggs, jerk baits and spinners.
SOUTHWEST AREA BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week. BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using tubes, senkos, wooly buggers and jerk baits for largemouth bass. A few bluegill were taken on worms and poppers. A few trout were taken on salmon eggs and worms. CABALLO LAKE: Fishing for walleye was fair for anglers using spinner/worm combinations and crank baits on the east side of the lake. White bass fishing was fair for anglers using crank baits, sassy shad, grubs and spinners. We had no reports on other species. ELEPHANT BUTTE: Fishing for white bass and black bass was very good this past week. Anglers did very well catching white bass in 5-to-25 feet of water. They were using jig and minnow combinations, slab spoons, crank baits, grubs, tubes and sassy shad. Anglers fishing a black bass tournament this past weekend reported the best fishing in several months. They weighed in large numbers of smallmouth and largemouth bass including two fish over six pounds. Anglers reported great success working primary and secondary points with an assortment of plastics including senkos, Robo worms, brush hogs, tubes and lizards. A few bass were also taken on jerk baits and top water lures. Fishing for catfish was good for anglers using stink bait, hot dogs and liver over baited holes. A few striped bass were taken on live bait and jigs. ESCONDIDA LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. GILA RIVER: Water on the main river was flowing at 32cfs as of Monday morning. Fishing on the forks was slow. LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs, prop flies and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species. PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species. QUEMADO LAKE: Trout fishing was good this past week for anglers using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, power bait and salmon eggs for trout from 16 to 22 inches. RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 1,510cfs as of Monday. Fishing was fair for anglers using grubs, liver, night crawlers and sassy shad for white bass, walleye and catfish.
SOUTHEAST AREA BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. BONITO LAKE: As of May 2, the City of Alamogordo has closed the lake to fishing and other activity. For further information and updates call 505-336-4157. BOSQUE REDONDO: We had no reports from anglers this week. BRANTLEY: Fishing was slow for all species. CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs for trout. LAKE VAN: We had no reports from anglers this week. PECOS: Below Sumner Lake, water flow on Monday was 81cfs. Fishing was fair using minnows and worms for catfish and small walleye. PERCH LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs and worms for trout. RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was .92cfs. Fishing was slow. SANTA ROSA LAKE: Fishing was good this past week for anglers using crank baits, jerk baits, power grubs, tubes, pitchin' craws, senkos and sassy shad for a mix of crappie, walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass. Most of the fish were in 8-to-10 feet of water. Water surface temps ranged from 52-to-60 degrees over the weekend. A few catfish were taken by anglers using liver and hot dogs on trotlines at the upper end of the lake. SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was rated as very good over the
past weekend as anglers weighed in over 400 pounds of fish at a fishing
derby. Catches included smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and white bass. A
great number of the smallmouth weighed in were in the 2-to-4 pound class.
Best baits were crank baits, tubes, grubs, sassy shad, bottom bouncer/worm
