Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at the Salato Wildlife Education Center

Frankfort, KY – In honor of International Migratory Bird Day, the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort invites you to celebrate conservation efforts for our feathered friends. Activities will take place at the Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Salato Center staff and volunteers will offer birding hikes, crafts and even a possible visit from one of our live birds of prey. Salato will also honor the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2006 Junior Duck Stamp winners from Kentucky. Artwork will be on display, so stop by for the awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and congratulate these young artists. Admission is free.

Whistle While You Walk at the Salato Wildlife Education Center

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky has more than 100 species of summer songbirds. How many can you name?
To help you improve your bird identification skills, come to the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort for one of our Birding by Ear walking workshops. Every Tuesday in May, Wildlife Biologist Danny Watson will lead hikes focusing on different habitats and identification of songbirds by sight and sound. Participants will receive a Birds of Kentucky Field Guide to take home.

Each hike will be conducted from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. Hikes are open to all ages and easy enough for beginners. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The cost is $10 and each hike is limited to 12 people. Registration and pre-payment are required. Hikes may be cancelled due to bad weather.

Wildflower Weekend at the Salato Wildlife Education Center

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky is home to more than 3,000 species of blooming plants. Explore these native treasures during Wildlife Weekend May 20 and 21 at the Salato Wildlife Education Center.

Bring good shoes and a sense of adventure as we take short walks and longer hikes along Pea Ridge Trail in search of wildflowers. Activities and program topics on Saturday include wildflower photography with Betty Hall of Betty Hall Photography, rare plants and a book signing with Tom Barnes of the University of Kentucky, wildflowers and wetlands with Tom Biebighauser of the U.S. Forest Service, native landscaping with Kris Stone of the Boone County Arboretum and nature journaling with native plant consultant Katherine Shaw. 

Sunday’s agenda includes landscapes for living lightly with native plant consultant Portia Brown, exotic invasive plants and their impact with Joyce Bender of the Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission and gardening for butterflies with Mary Carol Cooper of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

The cost for each day is $15, or participants can attend both days for $20. Registration and prepayment are recommended. General admission to the Salato Center is free.
