Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Provides Grants For Trails
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks granted over $1 million in the past year
to 37 different agencies and private organizations to build and maintain
trails in Montana. Another $1.1 million will be awarded this fall for trails
projects.
FWP administers the federal Recreational Trails Program, with oversight by
the Federal Highway Administration.
Last year 16 new urban hiking and bicycle trails were completed on city and
county properties, and maintenance was done on portions of another 183
backcountry trails on federal lands. Urban trail projects were funded in Big
Sky, Billings, Havre, Libby, Ronan, Seeley Lake, Shelby, Townsend, Virginia
City and Whitefish. Backcountry projects included maintenance of horse,
hiking and mountain bike trails and grooming of ski trails and snowmobile
trails in most national forests in Montana. A complete list of trails
projects is available on the FWP web page at
fwp.mt.gov under State Parks grant
programs.
