Crappie Regulation Changes at Grenada Lake

Jackson- New harvest regulations on Grenada Lake were approved by the Commission for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks on February 21, 2006. Grenada has become nationally recognized for large crappie. Fishing effort in 2005 was the highest ever recorded and had quadrupled since 1997. The new regulations intend to conserve some of these quality crappie.

Five crappie 12 inches or less may be kept as part of the legal daily creel limit of 30. At no time may an angler be in possession of more than five crappie 12 inches or less in length. All other crappie caught, measuring 12 inches or less in length must be returned to the lake immediately. The correct method of measuring a fish is with the mouth closed and the tail squeezed together to give the maximum length.

Grenada Lake anglers may fish no more three poles per person. Each pole may have no more than two hooks or lures. This change is intended to provide more anglers an opportunity to catch a trophy-sized crappie.

These new regulations will become effective March 21, 2006. For additional information call the Bureau of Fisheries at 601-432-2200.
