Multi-State Upper Potomac Roundtable Conference To Highlight Watershed Restoration Strategies

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVA — On March 2 and 3 representatives from state and local governments, soil conservation districts, watershed associations and other stakeholder groups will convene in Shepherdstown, West Virginia for the Upper Potomac Roundtable Conference. The conference provides a venue for stakeholders to discuss strategies to reduce local pollution impacts that will help meet Chesapeake Bay cleanup goals in the Upper Potomac Watershed.

Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources C. Ronald Franks will join West Virginia Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental Quality Bill Brannon, Pennsylvania Secretary of Environmental Protection Kathleen McGinty and Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Preston Bryant in giving opening remarks at the Conference.

Presenters include representatives from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, who will describe progress under the Chesapeake Bay tributary strategies and the opportunities and challenges that face local governments as the work progresses. Work sessions will focus on key issues and involve the participants as much as possible.

In addition, speakers will describe funding opportunities and future directions for the program. Overall, the roundtable will provide valuable information on how local governments can prepare to meet the cleanup goals.

The goal of the conference is to present topics relevant to the Upper Potomac region and to generate discussion on how to incorporate the Tributary Strategies into local government and community policies and programs.

The Upper Potomac Roundtable Conference is being hosted by the Upper Potomac Tributary Team of Maryland in coordination with Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Maryland Departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, the Conservation Fund - Freshwater Institute, the Canaan Valley Institute, and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB).

The roundtable is sponsored by the Conservation Fund, Keith Campbell Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, ICPRB, Mid Atlantic Regional Water Program and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The conference will be held at the National Conservation and Training Center in Shepherdstown.
