DNREC to Hold Public Hearing on Tidal Finfish Regulations
March 9
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will hold a
public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006 regarding proposed
amendments to the Tidal Finfish Regulations concerning summer flounder and
black sea bass. The hearing will be held in DNRECs auditorium, Richardson
and Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, Delaware.
According to Fisheries Section Program Manager Richard Cole, Delaware can
maintain the same management measures used in 2005 or liberalize measures
for the 2006 recreational summer flounder fishery since the harvest cap was
not exceeded in 2005. There are six approved management options to be
presented for public review, including the bag limit and minimum size:
Option 1 (status quo) minimum size 17.5 inches, bag limit 4, no closed
season
Option 2 minimum size 17 inches, bag limit 4, no closed season
Option 3 minimum size 17 inches, bag limit 5, no closed season
Option 4 minimum size 17 inches, bag limit 6, no closed season
Option 5 minimum size 16.5 inches, bag limit 3, no closed season
Option 6 minimum size 16.5 inches, bag limit 4, no closed season
Also proposed is an amendment to Tidal Finfish Regulation No. 3507 that
would adopt an Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission compliance
requirement that all states include language in their regulations that
clarify how to measure black sea bass for minimum size determinations,
excluding any caudal filament (a fin extension found in the adult male black
sea bass) as part of the total length.
Individuals may present opinions and evidence by writing the Fisheries
Section, Division of Fish and Wildlife, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901,
or by email to richard.cole@state.de.us. The record will remain open for
written or email comments until 4:30 p.m., March 10, 2006.
