2/13/2006 “More than 30 million Americans use rifles, shotguns and/or handguns for hunting and target shooting,” said GFP HuntSAFE Coordinator Curt Robertson of Pierre. “When these firearms are not in use, however, they must be safely secured. This is where firearms responsibility begins and ends - in the home.” The rules for safely storing firearms in the home are few in number and easy to follow. Below are a few tips that Robertson recommends:
Robertson added that most fatal home firearms accidents occur when youngsters - many times children who do not live in the home - discover firearms that adults thought were safely hidden or physically inaccessible. Most important is the guarantee that children cannot encounter loaded firearms. The precautions anyone takes must be completely effective, because anything less would invite tragedy. By strictly following the common-sense rules listed above, family members can prevent firearm accidents in the home. All anyone has to do is act responsibly and insist that other members of the family do the same. When this happens, your home will be as safe as you choose to make it. -GFP-
