HILO — The Department of Land
and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed Hapuna Beach State Recreation
Area, along the north west coast of the island of Hawaii, effective
immediately, due to severe weather. The park will remain closed while
bad weather persists, until further notice. Further closures may be
necessary on other islands as weather conditions mandate.
The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for strong north
winds increasing over the Big Island this afternoon and evening,
reaching speeds of 20 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 50
miles per hour in exposed areas.
“Our crews are reporting high winds and blowing objects at Hapuna so
we are closing the park to protect public safety," said Peter Young,
DLNR chairperson
"We also advise the public to avoid trails at this time due to
dangers from high wind," said Peter Young, DLNR Chairperson.
"People should avoid standing under or near large trees during high
winds," he said..
