LIHUE — The Department of Land
and Natural Resources (DLNR) has issued a public notice to cabin users
and picnickers at Waimea Canyon State Park that today, January 31, 2006,
it is flushing the waterlines at the Puukapele area of the park with a
high dosage of chlorine.
DLNR reminds the public that Waimea Canyon Lookout and Kalalau
Lookout are on separate water systems and are not affected by this water
restriction.
“This action is being taken following water line repair, to ensure
safe drinking water for park users,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.
“The treated water needs to stand in the waterlines for a 24-hour
period, then will be flushed out with fresh water.”
“Drinking or coming into contact with highly chlorinated water can be
harmful to you, your pets and your plants,” Young said.
“During this temporary water restriction, drinking water can be had
at Koke‘e Pavilion or Koke‘e Campground. Water for bathing is available
at Koke‘e Campground. The water at Koke‘e State Park is not affected by
the flushing of the waterlines at the Puukapele area,” he added.
DLNR warns the public that until this flushing is completed, the water
at this area of the park should not be used for drinking, cooking,
bathing, washing, flushing toilets or irrigation.
“If everyone complies with this notice, we expected to have the
normal water service back on line after several days. If people do not
comply with this notice, then the waterline flushing may have to be
extended,” he said.
“Normal water service will be restored after a follow-up water
quality sample has been checked by the Department of Health. We hope
this will be completed in a few days,” said Young.
