Sign up for Spring and Summer Volunteer Activities

DES MOINES - Though spring remains several weeks away, natural resources volunteers can plan their warm-weather service activities today.

Keepers of the Land, the volunteer program within the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is accepting applications, and encourages all Iowans to sign up with spring and summer programs.

Serve your favorite state park, receive free camping and get to know fellow outdoors enthusiasts as a campground host. Many state parks already have openings advertised for the upcoming season. Check www.iowadnr.com/volunteer/camphostneeds.html for details.

Campground hosts live and serve on park campgrounds, helping to check in campers, answer visitor questions and keep the campground running smoothly.

Another summer volunteer program, Project AWARE (A Watershed Awareness River Expedition), is currently accepting registrations. This year, the annual, weeklong river cleanup will take volunteers to the Iowa and English Rivers in southeast Iowa, June 17-24.

Volunteers will float the river, remove garbage, attend evening educational programs and receive free camping and low-cost meals. Find registration materials at www.iowaprojectaware.com.

In a new initiative, Project AWARE organizers hope to inspire and fund additional watershed cleanups through several mini-grants. These "CLEAR" (Community Leaders Enhancing Area Rivers) grants will help local groups sponsor their own cleanups.

Funded by the DNR's Resource Enhancement and Protection - Conservation Education Program (REAP - CEP), the CLEAR grants come in response to a flood of requests from local groups. Applications are due July 15, with a possible second round of applications due Jan. 15, 2007. For more details, visit www.iowater.net.

For more information, contact Merry Rankin at (515) 281-0878 or at Merry.Rankin@dnr.state.ia.us.
