Weekly Fishing Report

Catch of the weekSanta Cruz Lake: Jan. 21 , Tim Martinez of Alcalde caught a 19-inch cutthroat trout. He was using an olive-colored jig. Rio del Medio: Jan. 23, Jo Luepke of Cochiti Lake caught two nice 15-inch rainbow trout in the stream just above Santa Cruz Lake . The fish were caught on salmon eggs. The stream is iced over in the morning but fishable in the afternoon hours. Cochiti Lake: Jan. 28, Jeremy Chalon of Cochiti Pueblo caught a 4-pound catfish at Cochiti Lake. NORTHEAST AREA COCHITI LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. We heard of a single catfish caught on a night crawler fished from the bank. The boat ramp is open and free of ice. CONCHAS LAKE: Fishing continued to be slow for all species this past week. Two anglers worked the lake hard over the weekend and only managed to catch one walleye. The fish was taken at 40 feet on a slab spoon. We had no reports on other species. EAGLE NEST LAKE: The lake is covered with a thin layer of ice and is closed to ice fishing at this time. Conditions may change and anglers should call the state park office at 505-377-1594 for ice condition updates. LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Both lakes are still closed to ice fishing. Lake Alice is covered with a thin layer of ice which is unsafe. Lake Maloya is about 50% open with some floating ice. Bank fishing has been good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and white power bait for trout. Anglers should call the Sugarite state park office at 505-445-5607 for updated ice conditions. PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 10cfs near Anton Chico. The best reports have come in from anglers fishing the Villanueva area. Trout were hitting spinners, salmon eggs and small wet flies. RED RIVER: Water flow near Questa was 14cfs and below the hatchery was 44cfs as of Monday. Fishing was slow near the hatchery with better reports coming from anglers who walked downstream. They did best using dry/dropper combinations with small bead head nymphs. Small parachute adams worked well during BWO hatches in the afternoon hours. RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 422cfs. Fishing for northern pike was fair-to-good again this past week as several 20-to-30 inch pike were caught. Bunny leaches and jerk baits worked well. Fishing for trout was slow but there was some dry fly activity in the late afternoon hours. STORRIE LAKE: There is open water for bank fishing as of this writing. Fishing has been a bit slow with some trout being taken on salmon eggs and assorted power bait. For updated conditions, call the state park office at 505-425-7278. UTE LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. The surface temps should be running somewhere between 39 and 42 degrees. If you plan a trip here, fish deep and slow with slab spoons or jigs tipped with night crawlers or minnows. Work deep off main channel points in 35-to-60 feet of water to catch walleye, white bass and crappie.
NORTHWEST AREA ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing continued to be slow for all species this past week. ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing was reported as slow by most anglers but some managed to catch a few trout on the Corrales, Bernalillo and Belen Drains. They were using salmon eggs, wax worms and small wet flies. Two anglers on the Corrales Drain used dry flies on a cloudy afternoon and caught six trout. BLUEWATER LAKE: No fishing reports as of Monday as the lake is still covered with a thin layer of ice. Contact the state park office at 505-876-2391 for updated ice conditions. CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: Fishing was very good this past week for anglers fishing the youth pond and the regular waters. They were using salmon eggs, power bait, small spoons, prop flies and bead head nymphs. CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 246cfs and 21cfs below Abiquiu. Our only reports this week came from a few anglers fishing below El Vado. They caught a few brown trout and rainbows while using night crawlers, spinners and copper john barrs. EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers again this week. FENTON LAKE: No fishing at this time as the lake is still covered with a thin layer of ice. Call the state park office at 505-829-3630 for updated ice conditions. HERON LAKE: Fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs and roe sacs for rainbow trout. Anglers were catching trout in the La Laja boat ramp and Ridge Rock areas. There were no reports on other species. For updated conditions, call the state park office at 505-588-7470. JEMEZ RIVER: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 21cfs. Fishing was slow again this past week. A few trout were taken by anglers using small bead head nymphs. They were fishing downstream from Battleship Rock. NAVAJO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 371cfs. Trout fishing was quite good again this past week. Anglers did well using emergers, San Juan worms, sparkle worms, and red annelids. A few good size trout were also taken on dry flies. Fishing was fair through the bait waters and best baits were wax worms, night crawlers, copper john barrs and salmon eggs.
SOUTHWEST AREA BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week. BILL EVANS LAKE: Fishing was fair using salmon egg/corn combinations, power bait and spinners for trout. BURN LAKE: Fishing was fair using power bait, cheese and salmon eggs for trout. CABALLO LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. ELEPHANT BUTTE: The surface temperature this past week ranged from 42-to-48 degrees and the water was still quite murky. Fishing was slow for all species but there were a few catfish taken on live bait and dough baits fished at the north end of the lake. We had no reports on other species. ESCONDIDA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. GILA RIVER: Water on the main river was flowing at 55cfs as of Monday morning. We had no reports from anglers fishing the Forks this week. GLENWOOD POND: Fishing over the past weekend was good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and an assortment of flies for trout. Most of the fish were in the 10 inch range. LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was slow but a few trout were taken on salmon eggs. PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species. QUEMADO LAKE: The lake is covered with a thin layer of ice which is unsafe for fishing at this time. Anglers should call the Quemado Ranger District at 505-773-4678 for updated conditions. RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 2.5cfs on Monday. We had no reports from anglers this week.
SOUTHEAST AREA BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using corn, prop flies and salmon eggs for trout. BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Fishing at Cottonwood and Devil's Inkwell was fair-to-good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait and cheese for trout. BRANTLEY: Fishing was slow for all species. CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR: We had no reports from anglers this week. LAKE VAN: Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait and salmon eggs for trout. PECOS: Below Sumner Lake , water flow on Monday was 16 cfs. Fishing was reported as good for anglers using salmon eggs, power bait, spinners and spoons for trout. PERCH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week. RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was .41 cfs. Fishing was slow. SANTA ROSA LAKE: There were very few anglers on the lake this past week. Fishing was reported as slow for all species. SUMNER LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
