Four State Refuges Proposed for Removal

PIERRE, S.D. – A recent Game, Fish and Parks Commission proposal would repeal four South Dakota waterfowl refuges that are no longer serving their intended purpose.

Regional Habitat Manager Mary Clawson of Aberdeen said that the department’s long-term review of all state refuges has identified four that would, if repealed, result in additional hunting opportunities starting this year. She noted that landowners and the local public have been contacted about the proposed changes.

The refuges that are proposed to be repealed include:

bullet

Corsica Lake State Game Refuge in Douglas County

bullet

Dry Lake State Waterfowl Refuge in Hamlin County.

bullet

Freeman Dam State Game Bird Refuge in Jackson County.

bullet

Four Mile Lake State Game Bird Refuge in Marshall County.

The comment period for this proposal will be open up to 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 1. Anyone interested in presenting a comment is encouraged to do so at any time during the comment period by e-mailing wildinfo@state.sd.us or writing to Game, Fish and Parks, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, S.D. 57501. All comments must be received before 5 p.m. and include the person’s full name and address. Comments may also be presented in person to the GFP Commission at the time of the public hearing at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 2, at the Cedar Shore Resort in Chamberlain.
