Weekly Fishing Report Arkansas
Game and Fish Commission This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's fishing report for Jan. 18, 2006. If there is a body of water you would like to see included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river. Fishing Tip: Although many anglers shy away from high-visibility lines, they can be an excellent aid to detecting light strikes and keeping track of where your lure is. High-visibility lines rarely have any impact on fishing success in stained or muddy water or in areas with current. If you are fishing clear water and are afraid the bright color may affect your fishing success, tie a 3-foot leader of fluorocarbon between your line and the lure. This way, you can still benefit from the high-visibility line without spooking fish. Statewide Urban Trout Fishing Report: There are plenty of freshly stocked trout in urban ponds across the state. Fishing is good and catch rates have remained high. PowerBait, corn, and marshmallows are taking many fish. Several anglers have been successful using small crappie minnows. Spinners are working very well in ponds where the water is off-color. In the last two weeks, Rock Creek has been stocked with nearly 2,000 trout, so the fishing has been very good. Rain and higher flows in the creek have spread the trout out considerably. Anglers willing to look upstream and downstream of the traditional stocking sites should find good success and low pressured fish. Drifting chartreuse or pink PowerBait and worms has been very productive in faster moving waters. Look for areas with slower moving or deeper water near the faster water where trout can easily feed. Fly anglers continue to have success with woolly buggers, small nymphs and egg patterns. For the latest urban trout stocking information, call toll-free 1-866-540-FISH (3474). The following urban destinations are now stocked with trout: Lake Atalanta in Rogers, Murphy Lake in Springdale, West Memphis Park Pond, Pleasant View Park Pond in Russellville, Little Rock city park ponds (MacArthur Park, War Memorial Park Youth and Senior's, Kiwanis Park, Otter Creek Park, Boyle Park) and Rock Creek, Regional Park Youth and Senior's Pond in Pine Bluff, Cabot Community Pond, Sherwood Community Pond, Lake Valencia, Ft. Roots Pond in North Little Rock and Little Rock Air Force Base Pond. CENTRAL ARKANSAS: Lake Conway: Bates Field and Stream said the lake is low and the water is stained. Bream are biting fairly well on crickets and red worms fished around stumps and brush piles right next to the banks. Crappie fishing is good around Gold Creek on minnows and jigs in white-and-chartreuse, salt-n-pepper, and pink-and-white. Catfishing has been fair on stink bait and chicken livers. Little Red River: Lindsey's Resort said the river is running clear and the generators are only running for short periods of time. The fishing has been good, especially considering the cold weather that moved in over the weekend. Wax worms and chartreuse PowerBait worked well on the trout, as did the usual sow bug and egg patterned flies. The brown trout are still spawning, so the egg bite is still at its best. Greers Ferry: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 451.09 feet MSL. Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service < http://greersferry.com/fishfinder> said the surface water temperature is between 45 and 50 degrees during the day. Fishing for hybrids and white bass is excellent. The birds and fish are both feeding like mad. Just look for the large concentrations of birds and start fishing. The whites are almost ready to spawn. With a little more warm weather they'll be stacking up in the creeks and river. Black bass are hit and miss with all the cold fronts coming through, but that is typical for this time of year. Wiggle warts, Rite Bites Special Spinnerbait and jigs are accounting for all the fish on 45-degree chunk rock banks. Jerkbaits and jigging spoons are working well on the bluff ends. Crappie are holding in about 18 feet of water and are biting decent on jigs and minnows. Walleye are being caught up the rivers already. Not only are males being caught, but a few females have already started their move to their spawning sites also. Wally Divers and jerkbaits are working well, as are grubs and jigs. Fish deep during the day, and up shallow on stormy nights and evenings.Harris Brake Lake: Coffee Creek Landing said the lake is low and clear. Crappie are biting well in the coves around 4 feet deep. Lake Maumelle: Jolly Roger's Marina said largemouth and Kentucky bass have been fair in 15 to 20 feet of water. The largemouths are biting well on drop-shotted soft plastics and spoons, while the Kentuckies are going for the usual pumpkin-colored grubs and tube lures. White bass are slow right now, but you can find a few in the main channels of the creeks and river in 15 to 20 feet of water. Crappie fishing is excellent in 15 to 20 feet of water on small 1/32-ounce jigs and pink crappie minnows. Catfishing is slow, but a few have been caught on Canadian nightcrawlers and chicken livers fished around 20 feet deep in the main channel. Arkansas River: Charley's Hidden Harbor near Oppelo said the flow from Lock 9 is 900 cubic feet per second with a headwater of 284.50 and a tailwater of 263.80. Stripers are biting fairly well below the lock on silver wobble spoons like the Johnson Silver Minnow. Catfishing is fair along the edges of deep holes in the channel. A shad/nightcrawler combination has been working the best. Kentucky bass are biting well on the rocks in the late afternoon. Look for the bass in 4 to 8 feet of water. Largemouths are holding on the rock edges and biting well on camo-colored worms and tubes. Crappie are in the creeks like Point Remove and Copper's Gap. NORTH ARKANSAS: White River: Gaston's White River Resort < http://www.gastons.com/> said there was some generation last week, but one unit is hardly enough to even notice additional flow. Still, the extra water was a nice refresher for the trout. Low-water baits and flies, such as white plastic worms, or PowerBait artificial wax worms and yellow PowerBait or corn, are working well. Red worms are working well, also. The best artificials seem to be Little Cleos, Buoyant Spoons and Rooster Tails on 4-6-pound-test green low-visibility line. Fly fishermen are bragging about the Y2K bug and woolly buggers being the hot flies last week. This weekend is Eagle Awareness Weekend. Please contact Gaston's or the State Park for information on the free programs taking place all weekend.'McLellans Fly Shop < http://www.mcflyshop.com/> said there has been very little generation below Bull Shoals Dam lately, providing plenty of wading on the upper river from late morning on through the rest of the day. Wade fishing the upper river has been very productive with tan and olive McLellan's Hunchback Scuds and Woven Sow Bugs. Fishing high water out of a boat has also been very productive using large scuds, eggs, and San Juan Worms. Winter is a great time to fish a streamer (even in low water); try to trigger a strike from the aggressive brown trout by swinging a streamer like the Zoo Cougar or Platte River Spider through a pool. Experiment with different retrieves until you start getting hits.North Fork River: 'McLellans Fly Shop < http://www.mcflyshop.com/> said generation on the Norfork has been sporadic lately, but when they have turned on the generators, they haven't stayed on for very long. The wade fishing has been very good lately, and fishing high water from a boat has been productive as well. Scuds, sow bugs, midges, and eggs in low water, and eggs, San Juan Worms, and big streamers like the Articulated Zoo Cougar in high water have been producing plenty of hook-ups.Norfork Trout Dock < http://www.norfork.com/troutdock/> said the generators are running a little, producing some current, but there are plenty of wading opportunities left. Crappie have been very shallow lately and are relating to brush piles and other woody structure. The best lures have been minnows and jigs tight lined right in the thickest cover you can find. Bass fishing is good with many bass suspending off the bluff walls. Now's the perfect time to try the float-and-fly on these suspended bass. SWEPCO Lake: 'McLellans Fly Shop < http://www.mcflyshop.com/> said the action at SWEPCO has been fantastic lately. On cold mornings, several 2- to 4-pound bass are being hooked in the timber and along the bluff wall near the Flint Creek Power Plant outflow. Regular gummy minnows have been hooking their share of largemouth, but the new floating gummy has been the best strike producer by far. The floating gummy dives as it is retrieved and then floats back up to the surface during pauses, and most of the bass are hammering the fly during the pause. Some bass are even hitting the lure as it sits on top like a popper, sending spray several feet into the air! If you've never fished SWEPCO before, be sure to stop by 'McLellans <http://www.mcflyshop.com/>. They'll show you the hot spots and get you headed in the right direction. Don't let this spectacular winter bass fishing opportunity pass you by!NORTHWEST ARKANSAS Beaver Lake: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 1,105.5 feet MSL. Current in Little River is non-existent. Largemouth bass are biting well on pumpkinseed, black/red flake and purple smoke tubes along the pad stems in Little River. The best spots are where lily pad stems and vegetation remain near deep water. Spinnerbaits, soft plastics and firetiger crankbaits and Rat-L-Traps are working well along Little River. The fish are relating to the deeper drops in Little River that are close to flats and creek channel mouths. They are running up shallow to feed, then retreating to the depths of the river. Try fishing a ¼- to ½-ounce Rat-L-Trap on the flats in 2 to 3 feet of water during the heat of the day to catch the actively feeding fish. With the recent high winds muddying up the lake, firetiger and reds are the best colors to try. The jig bite is still strong, and the muddy water has helped. Largemouth and Kentucky bass are biting well. Many of the bass, especially Kentuckies, are gathering up into large schools. If you find one, there will be more. Most bass are deep. Some are still being caught on the outside edge of the grass from 18-27 feet of water. Others are positioning themselves in the bends and turns of channels. Mountain Harbor Resort said the surface water temperature is ranging between 44 and 50 degrees during the day. Walleye fishing is fair with some good fish being caught on jigging spoons and a jig-and-minnow combination in 18 to 30 feet of water around brush piles and humps. The stripers are holding around main lake points and rock bluffs near the river channel in all sections of the lake. Live bait, bucktails and C-10 Redfins are the best bets. Crappie are in the moss flats and brush piles topping out at 10 feet deep and dropping to 25 feet. 2-inch grubs and minnows are working well on the crappie.
