This fishing report has been generated from the best information available from officers and anglers


Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catch of the week

Big fish on small water: Jan. 1, Matthew Sweeten of Albuquerque caught a 20-inch largemouth bass on the Corrales Drain. He was using a small red wiggler worm.

NORTHEAST AREA

 

COCHITI LAKE: The boat ramp area is open and free of ice. This past week, one angler reported catching a 26.5 inch northern pike on a jerk bait. He was fishing near the dam over 50 feet of water. We had no other reports.

CONCHAS LAKE: There were no reports from anglers this week.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: The lake is closed to ice fishing but there is some open water for fishing from the bank. The open water is south of the south boat ramp and all of the Six Mile Creek area at this time. Conditions may change and anglers should call the state park office at 505-377-1594 for ice condition updates.

LAKE MALOYA/LAKE ALICE: Unsafe ice conditions exist at both lakes and there is no ice fishing permitted at this time. The area received a dusting of snow this past Monday. There is some open water for bank fishing and over the past weekend one angler at Lake Alice caught several good size rainbows while using power bait. Anglers should call the Sugarite Canyon State Park office at 505-445-5607 for updated ice conditions.  

PECOS RIVER: As of Monday morning, water flow was 3.6cfs near Anton Chico. Trout fishing in the Villanueva area was good for anglers using salmon eggs and corn.  

RED RIVER: Water flow below the hatchery was 52cfs as of Monday. Fishing was good for anglers using copper john barrs and egg patterns.

RIO GRANDE: As of Monday, water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 458cfs. Fishing was slow for trout but a few were caught by anglers using bead head nymphs. A few northern pike were taken on large bunny leaches.

SANTA CRUZ: We had no reports from anglers this week.

STORRIE LAKE: As of this report, the lake was free of ice and bank fishing for trout was good for anglers using corn, salmon eggs and power bait.

UTE LAKE: The surface temperature ranged from 40-to-44 degrees over the past weekend. Fishing was good for anglers fishing near Horseshoe Bend for white bass. They were using jigging spoons at depths of 46-to-52 feet. The best colors were white, chartreuse and lime green. Most of the fish caught were taken just off the bottom with a very slow jigging action. They also reported catching a few catfish and walleye. Some walleye and white bass were also taken on bubble gum and brown crawdad reef runners trolled at depths of 17-to-46 feet.

 

NORTHWEST AREA

 

ABIQUIU LAKE: There were no anglers on the lake this past week.

ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS: Fishing was reported as slow on the Peralta Drain, slow-to-fair on the Belen Drain and fair on the Bernalillo and Corrales Drains. Best baits were salmon eggs, wax worms and small bead head nymphs.

BLUEWATER LAKE: The majority of the lake is now free of ice and open to bank fishing. A thin layer of ice forms overnight but is usually gone before noon.   Fishing was fair this past weekend for anglers using cheese, salmon eggs, corn and power bait for trout. Contact the state park office at 505-876-2391 for updated ice conditions.

CONSERVANCY PARK LAKE: Young anglers continued to have a good time catching trout at the youth pond. The best bait again this week was wax worms.   Anglers fishing the catch and release pond did well using San Juan worms, egg patterns, wooly buggers, prop flies and spoons.

CHAMA RIVER: Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 238cfs and 48cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing at both locations was reported as slow-to-fair for anglers using small streamers, San Juan worms and bead head nymphs for brown trout.

EL VADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week but the majority of the lake is free of ice and open to bank fishing only. Ice is unsafe and the lake is closed to all ice fishing. There are some big browns and rainbows in this lake so give it a try.

FENTON LAKE: The ice is unsafe for fishing at this time and as of Monday there was some open water. Call the state park office at 505-829-3630 for updated ice conditions.

HERON LAKE: Fishing from the bank was fair this past week for anglers fishing the Ridge Rock area and near the La Laja boat ramp. They were using power bait and catching rainbow trout.

JEMEZ RIVER: As of Monday, water flow on the Jemez near Jemez Springs was 22cfs. Fishing was fair for anglers working downstream from the Soda Dam. They were using salmon eggs, copper john barrs and wax worms.

MANZANO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers trolling jointed crank baits on the Pine arm for rainbow trout. They were using light line and trolling about 150 feet back. We had no reports on other species.

RAMAH LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 501cfs. The water was slightly off color but with decent visibility. Trout fishing this past week was good in the Quality Water section for anglers using red annelids, brassies, RS2s, San Juan worms, sparkle worms, chocolate and black foam wing emergers and bead head wooly buggers. Through the bait waters, fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs, wax worms, garlic cheese, copper john barrs and jerk baits.

 

SOUTHWEST AREA

 

BEAR CANYON: We had no reports from anglers this week.

BILL EVANS LAKE: Trout fishing was good for anglers using power bait, corn and salmon eggs. A few were also taken on small spoons.

BURN LAKE: Fishing was fair using power bait, salmon eggs and corn for trout.

CABALLO LAKE: There was light fishing pressure this past week and fishing was slow for all species.

ELEPHANT BUTTE: The surface temperature this past week ranged from 44-to-47 degrees. The water was muddy with only about 6-to-12 inches of visibility. Fishing was slow for all species with catfish being the only catches reported to us. The cats were taken at depths of 15-to-35 feet by anglers using live bait.

ESCONDIDA LAKE: The lake was free of ice for the most part. Fishing was slow-to-fair for anglers using power bait, wax worms and prop flies under a bubble for trout.

GILA RIVER: Water on the main river was flowing at 52cfs as of Monday morning. We had no reports from anglers fishing the Forks this week.   

GLENWOOD POND: There is still some summer vegetation on the pond as the weather has been quite warm. However, it has been well stocked and is fishable.

LAKE ROBERTS: Fishing was reported as good by anglers using wax worms, bead head wooly buggers, salmon eggs and power bait for trout.

PERCHA DAM: Fishing was slow for all species.

QUEMADO LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

RIO GRANDE: Water flow below Elephant Butte was 2cfs on Monday. Fishing is difficult at this low level but should pick up in spring when levels are raised.

 

SOUTHEAST AREA

 

BATAAN LAKE: Fishing was fair for anglers using salmon eggs, corn and power bait for trout.

BOSQUE REDONDO: Fishing was fair for anglers using corn and salmon eggs for trout. A few were also taken on spoons.

BOTTOMLESS LAKES: Fishing was good for anglers using salmon eggs and power bait for trout.

BRANTLEY: Fishing was slow for all species.

CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

LAKE VAN: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using power bait, salmon eggs and prop flies under a bubble for trout.

PECOS: Below Sumner Lake , water flow on Monday was 15 cfs. Fishing was reported as fair for anglers using salmon eggs, wax worms and cheese for trout.

PERCH LAKE: Fishing was fair-to-good for anglers using prop flies, salmon eggs and power bait.

RUIDOSO RIVER: Water flow as of Monday was 1.1cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

SANTA ROSA LAKE: We had no reports from anglers this week.

SUMNER LAKE: There was no fishing activity on the lake again this past week.
