Division of Fish and Wildlife Announces State’s First
Handgun Deer Season
Delaware’s first handgun season for hunting whitetail deer will open on
Jan. 7 and run through Jan. 14, according to State Wildlife Administrator
Greg Moore.
“Many hunters have asked for this additional deer hunting opportunity and
we’re pleased to be able to provide it this winter,” Moore “This is one of a
number of increased opportunities we are bringing to sportsmen. It is also
one of the measures the Division of Fish and Wildlife is taking to better
manage the state’s rapidly increasing deer population.”
The following wildlife areas will be open for this inaugural season:
Augustine, near Port Penn; Cedar Swamp, near Woodland Beach; Woodland Beach,
near the Division’s Aquatic Resource Education Center; Ted Harvey, near
Kitts Hummock; and Assawoman, near Bethany.
Hunting will be by permit only. Permits will be issued via a daily lottery
from area checking stations. The daily lottery will start one and one half
hour prior to legal shooting time.
For additional information, hunters can contact the appropriate checking
station for each location. Check station numbers are: Augustine,
302-836-7294; Cedar Swamp 302-653-8080; Woodland Beach, 302-653-4802; Little
Creek/Ted Harvey, 302-739-4610; and Assawoman, 302-539-3160.
