GLENROCK BROTHERS WIN SEVENTH ANNUAL “YOUTH HUNTER CHALLENGE”

12/12/2005  -  CASPER – Until next September, you can call the Nugent brothers of Glenrock the reigning champs of Wyoming hunting.

It’s not because 15-year-old Kevin or 13-year-old Danny tagged monster mulies and got their picture on the cover of a national outdoors magazine.

Rather, the brothers displayed that outdoor expertise by besting other young hunters in trap shooting, .22 marksmanship, firearm knowledge, compass orientation, wildlife management and hunting ethics at the seventh annual Youth Hunter Challenge Sept. 10 in Casper.

Kevin won the 15-18 age group and the competition was bested by brother Danny in the 14 and under group.

“The challenge is a lot of fun,” said 15-year-old Kevin. “You get to show how well you can shoot and you get to learn quite a bit from taking the other tests.”

The challenge is one of the many activities featured at the Wyoming Hunting and Fish Heritage Expo. The competition is patterned after a similar test developed by the National Rifle Association.

“It (hunter challenge) is all pretty cool,” said Danny. “All kids who really like to hunt should take it.”

This fall the well-grounded brothers proved their skills go beyond the classroom and shooting range. Both harvested cow elk Dec. 7 near Douglas – 13-year-old Danny with just one 150-yard shot.

Hunting, and developing hunting skills runs in the family. Their older sister, Kerry, won the 15-18 age group last year.

Young hunters from across Wyoming are encouraged to compete in next year’s Youth Hunter Challenge, Sept. 9, at the Stuckenhoff Public Shooting Range in Casper. The challenge is one of the many activities at the annual Hunting and Fishing Heritage Expo.

“The challenge gives kids a chance to display not just their hunting skill, but also their hunter safety and responsibility. It shows kids really care about hunting and its future,” said Jake Hohl, Game and Fish education specialist and challenge coordinator. “So do a little practice shooting, review your hunter education manual, test your compass and accept the challenge.”

The Game and Fish provides all the firearms and ammo. Winners receive a certificate, tickets for the banquet and a subscription to Wyoming Wildlife magazine and newspaper. All entrants get a cap. Contact the Game and Fish next August to sign up.
