Arkansas youth waterfowl hunting tradition continues
LITTLE ROCK - An Arkansas duck hunting tradition continues later this month. It’s Youth Waterfowl Hunting Days and it’s scheduled for Dec. 10-11.

Young duck and goose hunters benefit from the special season, which was created several years ago by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission with the blessing of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It gives youths the chance to sharpen their duck hunting skills, while under the supervision of an adult.

The intent of this hunt is to increase youth appreciation of the state’s wetlands, outdoor traditions, sporting ethics and conservation.  On these days, youths 15 and younger may hunt ducks, geese, coots and mergansers. Pintail season is open, but canvasbacks are off limits this year. Youths who have completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by a mentor who is 18 years or older.

Youths who have not completed a hunter education course must be accompanied by a mentor who is 21 years or older. Mentors may not hunt ducks, coots or mergansers, but may hunt other game in season. Bag limits are the same as regular duck season.

Youths may hunt all day long on Wildlife Management Areas. All commission-owned Waterfowl Rest Areas and the Bob Young and Horsehead Creek WRAs on Dardanelle WMA are also open to youth hunting all day during the youth hunt. The only exception is the rest area on Ed Gordon/Point Remove WMA which is closed. Otherwise shooting hours are the same as the regular duck season. The Steve N. Wilson Raft Creek WMA will have a youth waterfowl hunt quota permit draw two hours before official shooting hours both days and approximately 25 permits for 4 party members each will be drawn on site.
