Public Hearing on Revised Regulations Governing Beach Protection and Use of Beaches Set for Dec. 14 in Dover

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Shoreline and Waterway Management Branch will hold a public hearing on proposed revisions to the Regulations Governing Beach Protection and Use of Beaches Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. in DNREC’s auditorium, Richardson and Robbins Building, 89 Kings Highway, Dover.

The revisions are proposed to improve the effectiveness of the Coastal Construction Program’s protection of the beach and dune system. They also would reduce ambiguity within the regulations and limit the amount and type of construction permitted seaward of the building line.

Redrawing of the building line, incorporation of changes to the Beach Preservation Act and the addition of new construction standards for coastal structures will result in less damage to structures and improvements to the dune and beach resource.

The revised regulations, including construction standards and construction activities permitted in the dune area were the subject of three workshops held on July 1, 2003, July 16, 2003 and March 16, 2005.

Copies of the draft regulations are available at www.dnrec.state.de.us/
dnrec2000/Divisions/soil/ShorelineCons/Draftregulations105.pdf  or by calling the Shoreline and Waterway Management Section, (302) 739-9921.

Written comments submitted prior to the hearing should be sent to Maria Sadler at: Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, 89 Kings Highway, Dover, DE 19901. For further information, contact Maria Sadler, (302) 739-9921.
