HUNTERS: THINK SAFETY
Richmond, VA — As the general firearms deer season opens across
the Commonwealth on Saturday, November 19, the Virginia Department of Game
and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) wants to remind hunters that an enjoyable day
in the woods begins with hunting safely.
First and foremost, we want to stress to sportsmen and sportswomen that
during the general firearms deer season, every hunter or person accompanying
a hunter must wear blaze orange.
In addition, all hunters are encouraged to follow three basic rules for
hunting safely. These are:
- Treat every firearm as if it were loaded;
- Control the direction of your muzzle, only pointing at what you intend
to shoot; and
- Before shooting, clearly identify your game and what is beyond.
Hunters using tree stands should follow these basic safety guidelines:
- Use a harness or safety belt to secure yourself to the tree;
- Use a haul line to get your unloaded gun or bow into and out of the
tree stand. Never climb with equipment;
- Keep portable tree stands in good working condition and thoroughly
inspect permanent tree stands for loose or rotten boards before using; and
- Stay alert and awake. If you start to nod off, get back to the ground.

seasons, bag limits, and more, visit the Department's Web site at
