Weekly Fishing Report

Arkansas Game and Fish Commission

Keith Stephens (501) 223-6342,
e-mail: kastephens@agfc.state.ar.us

This is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's fishing report for Nov. 16, 2005. If there is a body of water you would like to see included in this report, please call or e-mail us with information on possible sources for that lake or river.

Fishing Tip: Spring and fall are two times of year that dressing for the weather is extremely tricky. The day can begin with near-freezing temperatures then change to a sunny day appropriate for short sleeves. During these times of year, the best way to stay comfortable throughout the day is to layer lightweight clothes over each other. The added space between garments adds insulation without too much bulk, and the layers can come off throughout the day. Layering clothes also prevents the need for an expensive, heavy parka that gets in the way when you're trying to fish.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS:

Lake Conway: Bates Field and Stream said the lake is at normal level and the water clarity is stained. Crappie fishing is good from 11/2 to 6 feet of water. The best action has come on pink minnows and red-and-chartreuse sparkle jigs around log jams in Gold Creek, Caney Creek and the Hwy. 89 bridge. Bass are fair on white spinnerbaits, Horny Toads and blue-and-chrome Rat-L-Traps. Catfishing is fair on yo-yos baited with minnows and "Magic Bait."

Hatchet Jack's said reports are coming in from Mayflower that crappie are biting well on minnows, black-and-chartreuse jigs and red-and-chartreuse jigs in 3 to 4 feet of water.

Little Red River: Lindsey's Resort said the river is running clear and low with hardly any generation. Trout fishing has been good on chartreuse and pink Power Eggs. Fly-fishing with egg patterns, red brassies and sow bugs is also picking up quite a few trout.

Greers Ferry: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 451.78 feet MSL.

Shiloh Marina said the bream are all hanging out up at the surface right now. Crappie are biting well in 35 feet of water on ¼-ounce jigs. White bass and hybrids are schooling on the surface in 15 to 25 feet of water. CC Spoons are working well. Catfishing is good on chicken livers and dough baits. Walleye are fair on minnows fished right on the bottom.

Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service <http://greersferry.com/fishfinder> said largemouth and Kentucky bass can be caught schooling all over the lake on a variety of baits, including jigging spoons, Rinky Dinks, and top-water baits. The bass can also be caught on steep chunk rock banks on spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Smallmouth can be caught with jerkbaits, Rat-L-Traps and Carolina-rigged lizards and centipedes on secondary and main lake points about 15 feet deep. The catfishing has slowed somewhat. The walleye are really good but scattered and trying to get to their early staging areas. You can catch them with a jig-and-minnow, leeches and Pure Fishing's imitation leech, as well as jigging spoons and in-line spinners tipped with nightcrawlers slow trolled 43- 51 feet deep. Crappie and bream are biting well around planted brush piles and around pole timber on jigs and minnows as well as crickets in about 15 feet of water. The hybrid and white bass fishing is going good and they can be caught all over the lake in 43-51 feet of water. Hawg sticks and Chug Bugs with a Frontrunner have been the best bet when the whites are on top and the Buckshot Lure and jigging spoons are hauling them in when they head deeper.

Harris Brake Lake: Coffee Creek Landing said the lake is low but the water clarity is good. Bream fishing is fair on red worms and crickets. Crappie fishing is excellent on minnows and jigs in water 11/2-2 feet deep. Bass fishing is good on spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and plastic worms fished in 2 feet of water around brushy areas, rocky points and around piles of floating leaves.

Lake Overcup: Lakeview Landing said the lake is low and clear. Bream are biting well on red worms and small panfish flies. Crappie fishing is picking up with most of the crappie moving out to deeper water and hitting jigs. Bass are biting well on top-water lures and minnow-imitating lures fished in the transition areas.

Little Maumelle River: River Valley Bait said the recent rains have decreased water clarity substantially. Bream are biting well on red worms, crickets and fly-fishing poppers in 2 to 3 feet of water. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows and jigs fished on the deep channel ledge. Catfishing is good on live and prepared baits on a slip-sinker rig.

Lake Maumelle: Jolly Roger's Marina said black bass are biting well. The fish are holding off the channels and drop offs in 15 to 20 feet of water. Drop-shot rigs and spoons are working the best. Kentucky bass are being caught in the same areas, but the best baits for Kentuckies have been 3-inch pumpkin grubs, worms and tubes. White bass are biting excellently close to or in the channel 15 to 20 feet deep. They are feeding on schools of shad and have been breaking early to midday. Top-water baits and spoons have been deadly on them. Catfishing is good. They are hitting in the channel about 20 feet deep and are biting well on large minnows, Canadian nightcrawlers and prepared baits. Crappie are about 15 to 20 feet deep and are being caught on 1/32-ounce jigs and pink minnows. Reports on bream are good. Bream are hitting on crickets and worms. The larger bream are 20 feet deep.

Arkansas River: Charley's Hidden Harbor near Oppelo said the flow from Lock 9 is 5,000 cubic feet per second with headwater at 286.47 and tailwater at 264.55. The weather and hunting season has kept most people off the river. Catfish are moving to deeper holes in the river and are biting whole live shad fished on the bottom. Black bass are on the windswept banks and are still biting Horny Toads fished around woody cover. Stripers and white bass are on the windy banks chasing shad.

Arkansas River (Little Rock area): Hatchet Jack's Sport Shop said stripers are biting well on large minnows in 6 to 7 feet of water along the jetties. Catfish anglers are doing fairly well on cut bait, minnows and nightcrawlers fished on the downstream side of the jetties.

Pickthorne Lake: Outdoor Super Store said the lake is muddy and low. Crappie are starting to move shallow, and are biting fair on minnows in 21/2 feet of water. Bass fishing is picking up on crankbaits and Carolina-rigged crawfish-imitators on the deeper drop-offs.

Sunset Lake: Turbyfill's said everyone coming through the store is headed to the woods.

Saline River Access in Benton: Turbyfill's said everyone coming through the store is headed to the woods.

Terry Lock and Dam: McSwain Sports Center said the water clarity is very poor lately. Stripers are biting bass minnows and yellow or white Mister Twister curly-tailed grubs in the eddies below the dam. All other species have been slow.

Clear Lake: McSwain Sports Center said the lake is clear and low, but rising with the recent rains. Bream fishing is poor. Crappie fishing is fair to good in 3 feet of water on minnows. Catfish and bass are both slow.

NORTH ARKANSAS:

White River: Gaston's White River Resort said the river clarity is great with very minimal generations and a little rain bringing the cooler weather. Trout are biting well on yellow Power Bait and wax worms. Fly-fishing with Hank's Aunt Bee, sow bugs and olive woolly buggers has been productive as well.

McLellan's Fly Shop said generation has slacked off some this week, with one or two generators usually coming online in the early morning but only running for a couple hours, then shutting off for the rest of the day, providing plenty of wade fishing on the upper river from late morning on through the rest of the day. Wade fishing the upper river has been very productive with tan and olive McLellan's Hunchback Scuds and Woven Sow Bugs. Fishing high water out of a boat has also been very productive using large scuds, eggs and San Juan Worms. Roundhouse Shoals and Rim Shoals have been fishing very well lately with some small caddis hatches still coming off, so be sure to have plenty of size 16-18 Elk Hair Caddis. Also, fall is a great time to fish a streamer (even in low water); try to trigger a strike from the aggressive brown trout by swinging a streamer like the Zoo Cougar or Platte River Spider through a pool. Experiment with different retrieves until you start getting hits.

Wilderness Trail said fishing for trout on the White River has been good on Berkley Power Eggs in yellow, pink and Sunrise. With generation the Buoyant Spoons, Super Dupers, and Rooster Tails are the baits of choice. Fly-fishermen did well on olive woolly buggers, olive scuds, zebra midges and serendipity flies. The brown trout are being caught on Flat Fish, nightcrawlers and Rogues.

North Fork River: Norfork Trout Dock <http://www.norfork.com/troutdock> said the river is running pretty clear with a little generation. Rainbow trout are biting well on almost anything. Rainbows are biting well on Power Eggs and in-line spinners fished across the current. Brown trout are biting well on large Rapalas, Rogues and sculpin-pattern flies.

McLellan's Fly Shop said generation on the Norfork has been very sporadic lately, but it has slacked off some with the cooler temperatures, sometimes not even coming online during the daylight hours. The wade fishing has been very good lately, and fishing high water from a boat has been productive as well. Scuds, sow bugs, midges, and eggs in low water, and eggs, San Juan Worms, and big streamers like the Articulated Zoo Cougar in high water have been producing plenty of hook-ups.

Bull Shoals Lake: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 646.54 feet MSL.

Wilderness Trail said lake temperature is 63 to 64 degrees in the lower and mid-lake areas and 60 to 61 degrees in the upper lake above Lead Hill. Crappie are in 15 to 20 feet of water around the brush piles and along the bluff walls. Slip bobbers with crappie minnows on a chartreuse jighead are working the best. White bass have moved to the backs of the creeks in 50 to 55 feet of water with some of the shad. We have not seen any top-water action yet, but the spoon bite can be exciting when you find a school. Largemouth bass are still roaming in the lower and mid-lake areas but they are on the banks in the upper lake areas. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits are working around Tucker Hollow and in the upper part of the Theodosia Arm. The rest of the lake is slow but we are finding a few largemouth on wind blown points and blow downs or brush piles. Spider jigs, football jigs and trick worms are getting a few strikes. The smallmouth just won't move to the banks; they are staying out in 35 to 45 feet of water, hugging the bottom. Carolina rigs, football jigs and spider jigs are the best baits for the deep fish. Smallmouth in the upper lake area are a little closer to the banks, and a few aggressive ones are being caught on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and Zara Spooks. Kentucky bass are traveling with the shad, pushing them into pockets and cuts. Spoons and drop-shot rigs are still the best technique to catch Kentuckies. Walleye have been somewhat active this week, but they are scattered. Crawler harnesses and leech harnesses are working in 30 to 38 feet of water along pea rock banks and around main lake points. Casting Shad Raps, Wiggle Warts and DD14's along chunk rock banks in the creeks is producing smaller walleye in the 18- to 20-inch size class range. Long liners are pulling lead core with Hot'N Tots, Shad Raps, and Glass Shad 34 to 38 feet down over 40 to 45 feet of water and they are catching a few quality 'eyes in the 4- to 8-pound range each day.

Lake Norfork: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 541.02 feet MSL.

Cranfield Junction Quik Stop said the lake is 12 feet low. Crappie fishing is good on minnows. Bass fishing is extremely slow with very few reports of any fish being caught. Stripers are biting well in 70 to 80 feet of water on 1- and 2-ounce vertically jigged spoons.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Beaver Lake: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 1,107.06 feet MSL.

Southtown Sporting Goods said the lake is low, and the water clarity is good. Bream are biting well in 4-6 feet of water on worms and crickets. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows fished over the brush piles and stumps. Bass fishing is fair with largemouths being caught on spinnerbaits and crankbaits in the shallows during the morning and Kentucky bass hitting Carolina-rigged or drop-shotted crawfish imitations along the rocky ledges.

Lake Fayetteville: Lake Fayetteville Boat Dock said the fishing has been slow. Crappie fishing has been fair on small curlytail jigs.

Lake Sequoyah: Lake Sequoyah Boat Dock said the lake is low and clear. Bream are biting fair in 4-8 feet of water on worms and crickets. Crappie fishing is slow, but a few are being pulled from water 4 to 8 feet deep on minnows and jigs. Bass fishing is fair along the brush and mossy points in 4 to 8 feet of water on spinnerbaits and soft-plastics. Catfishing is fair on worms, chicken livers and goldfish.

Beaver Tailwaters: There has been very little generation over the past few weeks. If generators come online at all, it's usually been between three and five o'clock, providing plenty of wade-fishing opportunities. Of course, scuds and sow bugs as well as midge pupa patterns have been very productive. Egg patterns are starting to hook several fish as more trout start their pre-spawn activities. Some of our favorite egg patterns are the Flashtail Mini Egg, the Unreal Egg, and the Micro Egg. For the health of the fishery, remember to leave actively spawning fish alone, and avoid wading through their spawning redds (clean, oval depressions in the gravel). The best flies have been: McLellan's Hunchback Scud Gray and Olive (14-16), McLellan's Woven Sow Bug (14-16), Lightning Bug (16), Mercury Brassie (18-20), Pearl-Tungsten Soft Hackle (16), Flashtail Mini Egg (14-16), Unreal Egg, Micro Egg.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

White River: Local fisherman Jeff Moore said the White River at Batesville is 6.6 feet and rising. The low water conditions still make it difficult to navigate safely in certain parts of the river. Trout fishing in the Guion area continues to be fair with mostly small fish being caught. Corn, Power Bait, and worms are good choices for bait fishermen. Inline spinners and small Rapalas are catching fish, too. Waters in the Guion area that are normally too deep to wade are accessible and conducive to fly fishing, but some of the water will still need a boat for access. Largemouth bass are slow, but a few are being caught near the grass early and late in the day. Senkos, tube baits and topwaters continue to produce fish. Smallmouth are still biting well, but the average size ranges from 6 to 10 inches. Tube baits and crankbaits fished along the rocky banks will catch a lot of these fish. Catfishing near Lock 2 is still fair with prepared bait and worms. Fishing late and into the evening has been productive. A few crappie are being caught in the brush along the riverbank with a jig-and-minnow combination.

Lake Charles: Powhatan Landing said the water is stained and low. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows fished on the first drop to deep water. Reports on bass fishing have been good.

Black River: Powhatan Landing said the lake is low and clear. Bass and catfish were biting fair before the heavy storms on Wednesday, but have shut off.

SOUTHEAST ARKANSAS

Lake Monticello: Outdoor Super Store said most people heading to the store are stocking up on hunting supplies. Not many reports are coming from the lake.

SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS

Millwood Lake: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 259.22 feet MSL.

Millwood Lake Guide Service <http://www.millwoodguideservice.com/> said the water temperature ranges from 63 to 70 degrees and discharge at the dam is steady at 172 cubic feet per second. Largemouth bass up to 5 pounds are good on buzzbaits and War Eagle spinnerbaits in firecracker or smoke-mouse colors along Little River. Rat-L-Traps, Bagley or Norman crankbaits in white, chrome/blue and various shad patterns are taking some schooling bass up to 4 pounds. The medium-running crankbaits are taking a few of the larger bass just under the schoolers. Zoom Horny Toads and Bass Assassin Shads are taking some fair keepers in the dying lily pad stems and in pockets and backs of the creeks. Carolina rigs have improved this week along Little River. The best soft plastics have been Bass Assassin Shads, or a 6-inch chartreuse-pumpkin lizard. Yearling bass remain excellent and are schooling up Little River between White Cliffs and the Hwy. 71 bridge. Baby Torpedoes, Johnson spoons, Rat-L-Traps and Dying Flutters are catching the schoolers from the surface to 5 feet deep the last few weeks. White bass are still randomly schooling in Little River above and below the Hwy. 71 bridge along Little River and continue hitting 1/4 to 1/2 oz Rat-L-Traps in chrome, Rocket Shads, Little Georges and Rooster Tails. Lake Greeson: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 534.25 feet MSL.

Lakeside Grocery, Motel/Bait Shop said the lake is muddy and has been too low to even launch a boat in some areas. The recent rains should help. Bass fishing has been good in 1 to 10 feet of water on soft-plastic worms and crankbaits. Bream, crappie and catfish have all been poor.

DeGray Lake: As of Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake's elevation at 396.01 feet MSL.

Point Cedar Bait Shop said no reports have come in from the lake lately with deer season in full swing.

Iron Mountain Lodge said Hybrids are schooling early in the mornings and late in the afternoons around the State Park and Arlie Moore areas. Although these areas have been successful, the latest reports on hybrids have come from the Alpine and Brushy Creek areas. They are biting on spoons, shallow-running crankbaits, "Boy Howdies," and a wide variety of top-water lures. Bream are fair with worms off of points and shallow humps in 10-15 ft. of water. Crappie are good on minnows and tube jigs in 12-20 ft of water off of points, brush piles, and marina docks. The most successful jig colors for crappie are red-and-white, black-and-green and green-and-red." Catfish are fair in 15-25 ft of water off of main lake points and rock piles on nightcrawlers and different types of stinkbait. Largemouth and spotted bass are good. Most bass are shallow. Although some are still in the grass, most reports are coming from fishing around 8-12 ft. of water. Kentucky bass are biting well on live crawfish over brush in 15 to 25 feet of water. Walleye are fair to good, with reports of these fish being caught over or near large moss flats and humps. Jigging spoons and a jig-and-minnow combination are working the best. Try water 18 to 30 feet deep. Stripers are biting well on live bait, bucktail jigs and spoons. They are holding around main lake points and rock bluffs near the river channels on all sections of the lake. Bream are slow on crickets and worms. Try water depths of 12 - 20 feet. Crappie are getting better and being caught over brush piles and moss flats using feather jigs, 2-inch grubs and minnows. Try main lake points and large moss flats 10 - 20 feet deep. The best colors are white, silver and Tennessee shad.

Lake Ouachita State Park Marina said the heavy rains have raised the water level about 5 inches in the last week. Crappie fishing is picking up on Tennessee shad-colored jigs. Bass fishing is fair on top-water lures and large bass jigs fished around the remaining moss line. Catfishing is excellent on magic bait near the creek mouths. Stripers are biting well early and late in the day on top-water lures.

Lake Catherine: Trader Bill's Sport Shop said the lake has been drawn down to winter levels and is about 5 feet low. Bream are fair on crickets fished around any woody structure in the backs of bays around 3 feet deep. Crappie fishing is fair in 12 feet of water on minnows and jigs in lemon meringue and Tennessee shad around brush piles. Bass fishing has been poor. Catfish are fair on worms, blood bait and crayfish. Walleye are beginning to get active and are holding in 6-12 feet of water in the mornings and evenings.
