ASK THE GAME & FISH

Q. “When I go bird hunting and clean my birds, do I need to leave a wing or head on them for identification?”

A.  It all depends on the species.  If you are hunting sharp-tailed grouse, the feathered head or wing must be left attached to show evidence of species. The same is also true of partridge, waterfowl and all migratory game birds with the exception of doves. With pheasants, the head, wing or foot will suffice. However, if you are hunting blue, ruffed or sage grouse, evidence of species or sex is not required.
