Illinois State Museum “Where are the Wild Things?”

Annual Halloween Event

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - Where are the wild things? They’re at the Illinois State Museum this Halloween. Families are invited to the Illinois State Museum for the Halloween annual event “Where Are the Wild Things?” on Sunday, October 30, from noon-5 p.m. It is a safe and fun Halloween event for the entire family.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of exciting, hands-on activities including education stations, entertainment, games, and fun prizes. Children are encouraged to wear costumes and must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $2.00 per trick-or-treating child and $1.00 per adult at the door with no advance ticket sales.

Education stations and games will include:
• Spooktacular Spiders - build a giant spider web
• Creepy Crawly Adventures - see a live insect display and touch a hissing cockroach and millipede courtesy of the Fish Man Pet Center
• Ice Age Creatures - touch a Mastodon, giant Sloth, and giant Beaver fossil and guess what’s in the “Mystery Crate”
• A Wild Bat Journey - travel into a dark bat cave and learn about our nighttime friends
• The Underwater Monster - create your own drawing of a famous Illinois underwater creature
• Halloween Happenings - go on a fun scavenger hunt to explore Halloween history
• Halloween Tattoos - get a fun temporary Halloween tattoo
• The T.G. Dalrymple Circus - watch the jugglers, unicyclists, Milo, the prancing Pomeranian, Lucy, the All-American Canine, balancers, magicians, and clowns in this exciting mini-circus
• It Glows - see glow-in-the-dark rocks in orange, green, blue, and pink

Visitors who try at least four of the activities will receive a treat bag full of candy as they leave. Families can also have their picture taken with a friendly witch, have a chance to win a door prize, and meet Smokey Bear.

Entertainment to amuse children of all ages includes comedy juggler Troy Roark and magician Eldon Roark.

As a grand finale to the afternoon’s activities, children and their families are invited to participate in the costume parade. Families are invited to line up in front of the Museum at 4:30 p.m. to parade around the Capitol building and show off their costumes. At the end of the parade, kids will receive an extra treat.

Major sponsors for this year’s event include WNNS Lite Rock 99, Meijer and the Illinois State Museum Society. All proceeds benefit the Museum’s educational programming throughout the year.

Spring St. (the corner of Spring and Edwards Sts.) in Springfield, and is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Parking is available nearby and the building is accessible to individuals with disabilities.
