Catch-and-Release Rule Proposed for Portion of Rapid Creek

PIERRE, S.D. – Trout anglers fishing within the boundaries of Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City would have to practice catch and release for all trout if a Game, Fish and Parks Commission proposal is finalized without changes in November.

The reach of Rapid Creek along Meadowbrook Golf Course is currently managed for the catch and release of trout that are 10-inches or longer in length, along with a daily limit of five trout that are less than 10 inches in length.

"Anglers using this area of Rapid Creek basically do not keep trout, so this area already functions as if it were catch and release only," said GFP Regional Fisheries Manager Gene Galinat of Rapid City. "The current 10-inch size restriction has not had measurable benefits to the fishery in this reach, and this rule would help to simplify trout fishing rules."

The comment period for this proposal will be open up to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2. Anyone interested in presenting a comment is encouraged to do so at any time during the comment period by e-mailing wildinfo@state.sd.us or writing to Game, Fish and Parks, 523 E. Capitol, Pierre, S.D. 57501. All comments must be received before 5 p.m. and include the person’s full name and address. Comments may also be presented in person to the GFP Commission at the time of the public hearing at 2 p.m. (MST), Nov. 3, at the Howard Johnson Express Inn in Rapid City.
