BLACK BEAR SEASONS CLOSE IN BIGHORNS AND SIERRA MADRES

SHERIDAN – The 2005 fall black bear season for black bear hunt areas 1-5 in the Bighorn Black Bear Management Unit closed. This closure area is for all of the Bighorn Mountains; except for black bear hunt area 6 in the southeast corner of the region.

Hunters should check black bear regulations for specific boundaries. The female bear quota for black bear hunt areas 1-5 was reached Oct. 17, 2005, closing the fall season.

Black bear area 9, the Sierra Madres between Baggs and Encampment closed Oct. 16. Areas 7 and 8 in southeast Wyoming, Laramie Peak and the Snowy Range, have also closed this fall after reaching their female quota.

The bear season closes for each black bear hunt area or group of hunt areas in the black bear management unit when the female mortality number has been reached. The female quotas are used to insure that over harvest of females does not occur.

It is the hunter’s responsibility to confirm that the black bear hunt area the person intends to hunt is open. The status of hunt area closures is available 24 hours a day by calling (800) 264-1280.
