FWC EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR HURRICANE-RELATED MARINA REPAIR GRANTS PROGRAM

October 24, 2005
Contact: Patricia Harrell (850) 488-5600

Florida’s marina operators, still reeling from last year’s hurricane siege, drew a break amid this year’s storm season. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) extended the deadline for them to apply for aid to repair properties damaged during the 2004 hurricane season. The FWC will accept applications by mail through Nov. 15.

Grants will provide funding for repairing or rebuilding structures, debris removal, equipment repair or replacement or insurance-deductible reimbursement. The governor and Florida Legislature approved the funding to help rebuild marinas that provide public access to Florida waterways.

To be eligible for these grants, publicly or privately owned marinas must offer 90 percent of their in-water slips and upland dry-stack slips to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis with no qualifying requirements, such as club memberships, stock ownership or equity interest. In addition, the marina must be in a county declared an emergency area in 2004, and damages to the marina must have occurred during hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan or Jeanne.

Successful applicants must continue providing public access for at least five years.

Go to MyFWC.com/boating/grants/marinas to download an application, guidelines and list of designated counties. For more information, call FWC at (850) 488-5600 or e-mail Marinas@MyFWC.com or contact the Marine Industries Association of Florida at (305) 663-1911 or miaf@att.net.
