SEPTEMBER BEAR SEASON NUMBERS

Licensed black bear hunters took to the woods of western and central Massachusetts during the September 6–24 early season and emerged with 98 bruins.

Preliminary figures indicate the Western District checked in 54 bears. The three check stations in the Connecticut Valley checked in a total of 39 bears. The Central District checked 4 bears, and the Westboro Field Headquarters checked in one. Rifles, muzzleloaders, archery equipment and certain handguns were permitted during the September season. A second one week season commences on November 21. Last year's total harvest was 146 bears.
