IDAHO FISH AND GAME
HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE Boise, ID
Steelheading Picks Up Fall steelhead fishing is picking up on Idaho's rivers. Steelhead have been crossing Lower Granite Dam at the rate of about 3,000 per day since mid-September. Lower Granite is the last dam steelhead cross before entering Idaho on their way back from the ocean. Fishing is picking up in the lower Snake, Clearwater, and Salmon Rivers as these fish make their way upstream. Even the upper Salmon River near the town of Salmon had anglers catching a few steelhead over the weekend. Check the steelhead fishing report at the Idaho Fish and Game website http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/fish/ for more information. The limits this fall are three steelhead per day, nine in possession, and 20 for the season. As part of the 2006-2007 fishing seasons and rules proposal, fisheries biologists have proposed a lowering of the limits to two, six, and 20 starting next year to help spread out fishing pressure. Fish and Game is seeking public input on this and other proposals before making final recommendations to the Fish and Game Commission in mid-November. Anglers must have a valid fishing license and a steelhead permit to fish
for them.
