National Park Service Director Pledges Support for Protecting Historic Treasures during Hurricane Recovery Effort Speaks to National Trust for Historic Preservation

Portland, OR --- Fran P. Mainella, Director of the National Park Service, will speak to the National Trust for Historic Preservation at the Annual Preservation Conference in Portland, Oregon. In addition to discussing preservation grants and other important issues, her message will be that during the recovery effort following two major hurricanes, the preservation community must remain committed to saving our valued historic and cultural resources. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita damaged and destroyed the historic legacy of more than 300 years of American history and took a heavy toll on the heritage and historic fabric of the Gulf Coast. The Director will highlight National Park Service cultural resource programs dedicated to recovering and stabilizing sites, structures, and objects in the impacted areas, and the extensive site documentation, technical information, and training available to meet the needs of the states and to provide on-site assistance.

WHO: Fran Mainella, Director, National Park Service

WHAT: National Trust for Historic Preservation Annual Preservation Conference.

WHEN: Thursday, September 29, 2005.

WHERE: Hilton Portland Hotel, Portland, Oregon

As the recovery effort begins and moves forward, the Director will encourage those doing the recovery work to recognize the value of cultural preservation rather than rebuilding, and help them as they begin their difficult task. Following Hurricane Katrina, the cultural resources programs of the National Park Service responded with guidance on recovery and stabilization of sites, structures, and objects in the impacted areas. The preservation community can help guide decisions about the possibility of repair and rehabilitation, rather than demolition. Director Mainella’s speech will be available on-line Wednesday, at the NPS web site for cultural resources hurricane response at http://www.ncptt.nps.gov/
