SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) celebrates the 35th anniversary of National Hunting and Fishing Days (NHFD) with two festival events to be held the weekend of Sept. 24-25. The Northern Illinois National Hunting and Fishing Days event will be held at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area near Yorkville, while the Southern Illinois National Hunting and Fishing Days celebration is scheduled at John A. Logan College in Carterville. "The National Hunting and Fishing Days events highlight the great hunting and fishing heritage we enjoy here in Illinois while recognizing the important roles those who fish and hunt play in conserving wildlife and fisheries,” said IDNR Director Joel Brunsvold. “The events are fun and educational for families, youngsters and hunters and anglers of all ages.” The Northern Illinois National Hunting and Fishing Days celebration at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area near Yorkville features free admission and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25. Activities in northern Illinois include canoe rides with a chance to paddle your own canoe; an historic voyager encampment; fishing and casting for kids; deer, fishing, turkey, trapping and outdoor women seminars; duck and goose calling seminars; shooting and archery demonstrations; a wide variety of hunting dog demonstrations; vendor and food areas; and exhibitor displays. The Southern Illinois National Hunting and Fishing Days festival has traditionally been the largest NHFD event in the country. It will be held on the John A. Logan College campus in Carterville from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25. Parking and admission are free. Activities at the southern Illinois celebration include a popular kids activity area with opportunities for archery, shooting and fishing; fishing demonstrations at the Hawg Trough; free hunting seminars; turkey, duck and goose calling contests; an Outdoor Art and Heritage Show; a wildlife enhancement and conservation area; the Illinois Big Buck and Shed Antler show and competition; dog demonstrations; vendor displays and musical entertainment. The National Hunting and Fishing Days celebrations in Illinois are made possible through sponsors and patrons, the Northern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days and Southern Illinois Hunting and Fishing Days committees, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
