Heading for Mexico by Lowell Washburn A flock of migrating blue-winged teal scorch their way across a north Iowa wetland as they head toward the southern wintering grounds. In Iowa's North Zone the first, five-day segment of this year's split duck season begins Saturday, Sept. 17. DNR wildlife biologists are predicting that hunters will encounter good numbers of teal, wood ducks, and mallards. Biologists have reported peak numbers of blue-winged teal passing through the state during the past 10 days. Although water levels have receded on many northern Iowa wetlands, most marsh areas are still hosting good to excellent numbers of these tiny, web-footed speedsters.
