| The Department of Fish and Game (DFG)
reminds ocean anglers that the salmon sportfishing season will close
Sept.11 only in waters from the Oregon border to Horse Mountain
(Humboldt County). Salmon season will remain open in the following
areas:
• Fort Bragg area (Horse Mountain to Point Arena), open through Nov.
13.
• San Francisco area (Point Arena to Pigeon Point), open through Nov.
13.
• Monterey area and south (Pigeon Point to Mexico border), open through
Sept. 25.
In the open areas, anglers are allowed a daily bag and possession
limit of two salmon of any species, with the exception of Coho salmon
(also known as silver salmon) and steelhead which may not be taken from
any California ocean fishery. Salmon may be taken only by angling (by
hook and line where the fish voluntarily takes the bait or lure in its
mouth). Anglers may not use sinkers or weights exceeding 4 pounds unless
a separate line suspends the sinker or weight and the line releases
automatically from the sinker or weight by a mechanical device when any
fish is hooked.
North of Horse Mountain, the minimum size limit is 24 inches total
length. South of Horse Mountain to the Mexico border, the minimum size
limit is 20 inches total length for the remainder of the season.
The following special gear restrictions remain in effect between
Point Conception and Horse Mountain for all anglers fishing with bait
and angling by any means other than trolling:
• Anglers must use no more than two single-point single-shank barbless
circle hooks. Regulations define a circle hook as a hook with a
generally circular shape and a point that turns inwards, pointing
directly to the shank at a 90-degree angle.
• When using two hooks, the distance between the two hooks must not
exceed 5 inches when measured from the top of the eye of the top hook to
the inner base of the curve of the lower hook. Both hooks must be
permanently tied in place (hard tied).
• Regulations define trolling as angling from a boat or floating device
that is making way by some source of power other than drifting by water
current or weather conditions.
• These restrictions apply to anyone fishing for salmon or fishing with
salmon on board.
