LAKE MICHIGAN SALMON AND TROUT STOCKING CONFERENCE

SPRINGFIELD, ILL - Interested anglers and the general public are invited to a one-day conference on future stocking options along with the status and health of the trout and salmon fishery in Lake Michigan on Saturday, September 24 on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Participating agencies include the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and counterpart natural resources departments in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, along with the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority.

“Fishing on Lake Michigan for salmon has been very good, but there is cause for concern that Lake Michigan predator fish species and their forage may be trending toward an imbalance,” said Tom Trudeau, Illinois DNR Lake Michigan Program Manager. “Growth rates of Chinook salmon have declined in recent years and the abundance of forage - principally alewives - is also down.”

The Illinois DNR and other Lake Michigan fisheries management agencies are considering reducing stocking of Chinook salmon and would like to hear the opinions of anglers and other interested citizens. The conference in Kenosha on September 24 will provide a scientific review of the status of predator and prey species and options for future fish stocking in Lake Michigan.

The conference will address management goals and objectives, the health and status of Chinook salmon and their prey; an analysis of the risks involved with any decisions, and potential options for stocking (including no change in current stocking). Afternoon sessions will include input from the public.

The public is invited to attend the conference on September 24 at 9 a.m. in the Student Union Cinema at the Parkside Campus of the University of Wisconsin, located at 900 Wood Road, Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Conference registration is $10. Registration is being coordinated through Wisconsin Sea Grant. Refreshments and lunch will be served. For registration information, call 920/683-4697 or check the website at www.seagrant.wisc.edu/fisheries/.
