Lake Bemidji State Park to improve marina, landing; access temporarily
closed through spring 2006 (2005-08-30)
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is planning a major
reconstruction of the marina and boat landing access ramp at Lake Bemidji
State Park in September.
Because the work is so extensive, the DNR will close the marina, harbor and
landing on Sept. 12 and reopen in the spring of 2006.
The work will include replacement of all docks with floating style docks.
The remodeling will improve access to the marina area for visitors with
disabilities as well as make more efficient use of the area, according to
Paul Mork, Lake Bemidji State Park manager.
"Although the work includes dredging of the harbor, the design will not
disturb the natural vegetation along the east side of the harbor," said Mork.
"Upgrading the docking structures to floating docks will also help us better
deal with water fluctuations on the lake."
The funding for this project is from the dedicated Water Recreation Account,
which is collected as part of Minnesota's gasoline tax and set aside for
these types of recreation projects.
