Dove season outlook is good for Arkansas hunters

LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas’ 2005-06 mourning dove hunting season begins Saturday and from all accounts, the drought may cause some problems for hunters.

According to the AGFC migratory bird biologist Andrew James, finding water will be the key to success during the opening weekend. "This year, as dry as it has been, it looks like the key is going to be finding a permanent water source. Things are so dry, many dove are concentrated in areas near permanent water," James said.

"Our field employees that are banding doves are having good luck and it looks like we should have a great opening day with plenty of birds, James explained. "Don't forget, the season does not end after opening weekend. There is still good dove hunting to be had.  Some of the best hunting, without the crowds of opening day hunters, can be done during the October and December segments of the season," he explained.

"Last year our harvest was about 800,000 and I do not expect it to be any lower than that this year. I do not expect it to be any lower than that this year," James said. Season dates are Sept. 3-25, October 8-23, and Dec. 19- Jan. 8. The daily bag limit for doves is 15 birds, with a possession limit of 30. Shotguns must be plugged to hold no more than three shells.

Hunters are reminded that they must possess a Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP) Permit to hunt mourning doves. Possession of a HIP permit is required of all hunters who pursue migratory birds.  A HIP permit may be obtained anywhere hunting licenses are sold. HIP registrations expire on June 30 each year.

Hunters are reminded to practice safe hunting. Don’t take shots at low-flying birds and risk endangering a fellow hunter on the other side of the field.

Hunters are also asked to familiarize themselves with state and federal laws and regulations that apply to dove hunting. If you have any concerns or questions about baiting regulations, call your local AGFC law enforcement officer.

Mourning dove hunting can be some of the most challenging wing-shooting around, a real test of your shooting skills. The reward for the skillful marksman and fortunate hunter may be the delight of charcoal-grilled dove breast along with your favorite vegetable dish and appropriate beverage.

For more information, look for the “2005-06 Dove Season” pamphlet at your local license retailer or your local AGFC office.
