BEACH SWEEP/RIVER SWEEP 2005 NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR SEPT. 17

Volunteers are needed for Beach Sweep/River Sweep 2005. On Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to noon, you can help rid the state's rivers, lakes, creeks, marshes, beaches, boat ramps and waterside recreational areas of unsightly debris and litter. Beach Sweep/River Sweep is the state's largest annual one-day cleanup and thousands of volunteers will participate while helping protect South Carolina's natural resources.

To participate in a lake, river, stream, creek, or wetland d cleanup, contact Alison Krepp of S.C. Department of Natural Resources' Land, Water and Conservation Division at (843) 953-9335 or via email at href="mailto:KreppA@dnr.sc.gov">KreppA@dnr.sc.gov To participate in a beach, marsh or coastal creek cleanup, contact Susan Ferris at the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium at (843) 727-2078 in Charleston or via e-mail at Susan.Ferris@scseagrant.org Information is also available on the DNR Website at http://www.dnr.state.sc.us/water/envaff/

Anyone can help including clubs, civic organizations, schools, church groups, businesses, families or individuals. You may select any beach, river, lake, marsh, creek, or boat landing you wish to clean or request assignments to needy areas. All necessary supplies and instructions will be provided.

Despite an unusually active hurricane season last year, nearly 3,000 people participated in 2004 and approximately 11 tons of litter was cleaned from the state's waterways and beaches. So far this year, 33 counties have a least one site participating in Beach Sweep/River Sweep 2005.
