Applications To Hunt Tundra Swan Due By Sept. 9
The deadline to apply to hunt tundra swan is Sept 9. Tentative swan
season dates in the Pacific Flyway are Oct. 15-Dec. 1, and in the Central
Flyway they are Oct. 1-Jan. 5, 2006.
In the Pacific Flyway, which includes Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area
near Fairfield, there are 500 permits available for swan hunting in Cascade,
Chouteau, Toole, Liberty, Hill, and the portions of Teton and Pondera
counties east of U.S. Highway 287 from Augusta to Choteau, and U.S. Highway
89 from Choteau to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The remainder of the
Pacific Flyway portion of the state is closed to swan hunting.
An additional 500 permits are available for the Central Flyway portion of
the state.
Hunters who apply for a swan permit must include a $3 nonrefundable drawing
fee with their application. All hunters are also required to have a Montana
migratory bird license -- $5 for residents and $50 for nonresidents—and a
conservation license for $6.25 for residents and $9.25 for nonresidents.
Resident and nonresident hunters also need a $15 federal migratory bird
stamp.
Hunters may only apply for a special swan permit in one flyway. All
waterfowl hunters must also complete a harvest survey before purchasing a
Montana migratory bird license.
Hunters may apply for a swan special permit online at fwp.mt.gov on the
Hunting page under Obtain A License, or at any FWP regional or area office.
Hunters may also apply by submitting their name, address, phone number and
ALS number, and specifying a flyway, and sending a $3 nonrefundable drawing
fee to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Attn: Swan Special Permit Drawing,
P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701 postmarked no later than Sept. 9.
